Questions About Living in Boston

I'm going to be moving to Boston soon and I was hoping that some of you guys would be able to help me out on some things about Boston.

1. What are the good and safe areas to live in? I need a place (2 bedroom apartment as I will have a roommate) that is relatively close to Boston University since I'll be a graduate student there. How far away are these areas from BU (as in walking, subway, or bus)? Is there a certain area where most of the graduate students go?

2. Parking. I know you don't need a car in the city, but do apartments come with parking available? Does it usually cost extra?

3. Cell Phone...Yes, I don't have a cell phone 😱 What cell phone services are the best in Boston?

1. If you want to live near BU, any of the streets off Commonwealth St. on the MBTA B line should be fine. Check out BostonApartments.com or Craigslist.org for apartment listings. If you don't mind living a bit further from school, Beacon St. and the Fenway area should be alright too.

2. Parking is usually not included with the apt. and can cost $100+/month for apt. parking. You can get street parking for residents (which is free or close to free) but you have to worry about street cleaning and such.

3. T-Mobile, Cingular, Sprint, and Verizon all seem to work alright here.

Prepare to freeze your ass off in winter since you're coming from Alabama.
 
The area around BU is pretty good, it borders brookline so you could probably find relatively decent apartments in both places. Like spartan said your best bet is something near comonwealth, I think i used boston best realty or something for that area,

When I was looking at places around there a lot of them didn't have available parking so you'll probably have to get residential parking which is a pain in itself.

just stay away from me and my homies in Roxbury, go NU
 
There's a bunch of housing in and around BU, near Comm Ave as the others are saying.

Neighboring towns include Allston, Brighton, Brookline, Watertown, Cambridge. All with their ups and downs.

Parking's a BITCH in that area. You've been warned.

No, Woburn sucks my balls. It is the crappiest suburb in the area. Avoid it at all costs. Try to live closer to the city if you can.

Boston is expensive and the housing and renting market have gone through the roof in the past 5 years. Most young couples are moving out of the area because the average cost to buy a house is around $300-$400K for anything decent. Boston also has a high unemployment rate and ranked 4th last year for percentage of jobs lost in the nation.
 
i don't know about LIVING in Boston, but I know about how to have fun in Boston.
