Hi all. I believe that I remember reading about litestep in a thread some time back. I checked out their website and it looks pretty cool. I want to try it out, but have some questions.

1)How good is it actually?
2)How hard is it to get working?
3)Are there any issues, such as incompatability issues, that I should be aware of?

Thanks in advance for any replies. And also, please feel free to give me any usefull tips or tell me anything you think I should know.

For those of you who don't know what litestep is, you can go here -> Link

I tried it but you will lose some of the features your used with Windows 98/2000. After the neato cool factor wears off it just becomes annoying. It can be somewhat unstable depending on which ones you run.

There shouldn't be any incompatibility issues since it really doesn't change anything, your system is still win98 or whatever. It just changes the look, and you lose your windows start bar thing in most of the themes. As for installing it, it really depends on how familiar you are with computers, things such as DOS. Also alot of configuration is done in notepad. I've been using litestep for almost two years now, in that period I've used 3 different themes. Here is what is looks like now:

if you want a change in look and have a fast system, just get windowblinds. It will just change the appearance of everything.

Windowblinds doesn't even come close to what litestep is capable of..

However, I hate litestep, too much of a pain to configure.. Personally, I use reveal along with a few other utilities to make life a little easier. And I am currently writing a program that will allow people to 'resize' a design for reveal to match whatever resolution they are currently running.

[insert shameless plug for own website] If you want to take a look at reveal, stop by my site. Its the main distro site for the reveal shell and designs. Hasn't been updated in a while, been busy on another project that will make litestep look like jumbo legos... :) Reveal Design Warehouse[/end shameless plug]

I used litestep for about a month. There are only a few hardware problems I have heard of and they have to do with the ATI video cards. I have an AIW 128 pro and didn't see a problem however. I liked the ability to get around the explorer shell, but as others have said it can be a pain to configure everything.

Not too difficult to use if you understand basic computer concepts. Find a theme you like and try it out for awhile.

I gotta check out that reveal stuff........

litestep is ok, but unstable. I never had a hardware problem. It was a fad for me.

I thought it was a pain in the a$$.

I installed it on Win2000 and lost some functionality. I never did get it working completely. I will admit that it was a long time ago, and it might be a lot more stable nowadays.

Litestep is cool, it's just a pain to have to manually configure EVERYTHING. I made a sweet WinAmp plugin, let me know if you want it.

basically, Litestep rocks. yes its takes some doing to configure, but its not hard if you have any knowledge of simple programming (very simple)... however, i would think this would be fun for most people (specially on this board)
Ive run it from time to time, just havnt had the time to put it on my newest computer yet(i stress the word YET).

I have been running LS on both my work and home machines for the last 6 months or so. I have really only used the Plastik theme, so I can't comment on the others. I have tried to switch, but I like the features built into Plastik, just not the appearance. So one of these days I am going to "remix" it.

I will have to check out that Reveal bizness though. Maybe I should give it a whirl.
