I disable system restore because it is a total waste of time and space.

I do too, its a heaven for viruses and it is useless for fixing actual problems.
Also slows you down during installs and wastes space.

But the question was about if there is a special reason to disable it for SSDs. And some CLAIM that there is.

If reloading the OS is not at all a problem when/if something screws up, go right ahead. On Windows 7, system restore does actually do a pretty good job at its intended functions, at least not doing any harm, if it doesn't help; as opposed to the roulette of XP system restore.
Thats a fair point. My comment was based entirely on XP's system restore which I have found to be utterly useless. I have used it many times on many different machines only straight after to think "that time would have been much better spent on a format".

I have never actually used Windows 7 system restore.

The Magician tool poses something of a conundrum if you - like me - have installed the SSD (Samsung 830 128 GB) in a non-windows system (my netbook has yet to receive its Linux OS, Xubuntu 12.10), because Magician flatly refuses to download the firmware when installed on another (Win7HP 64bit) laptop if said laptop doesn't have an SSD inside (which it doesn't, its got a regular HDD).

So you have the unpleasant situation that you need Magician to create a bootable USB stick for an upgrade, but Magician won't do that without the FW, so you need to download the firmware through Magician (since Samsung doesn't post the FW anywhere), BUT Magician will NOT let you DL the FW because it cannot SEE the SSD !!

Apparently the guys at Samsung cannot imagine a situation like this, otherwise I cannot imagine they would pose such a ridiculous limitation on Magician. I tried via live chat and twitter to explain to Samsung support that I need an FW image, either through a link or via mail, to enable the bootstick creation in Magician, but all I get is a reference to a phone number, which is rather frustrating.

Edit: Samsung DOES make the FW available on site, see posts further down. I do however still believe it's ridiculous to pose the limitation on downloading the FW through Magician if Magician does not detect an SSD.

If anybody here could supply the FW image, I'd be much obliged.

As said above, if you go to the support section of your countries Samsung website, then downloads, SSD, choose your model number you can download an ISO with the firmware on that you burn/USB mount and then boot.

Thanks to you, and thanks to WilliamM2 for the DL-link! I tried my country's support pages and revisited these to make sure I hadn't missed it, but in my country (Holland) there's no firmware to be found on the site, at least not when searching via the exact modelname/ID of my 830 (MZ-7PC128B). Turns out u can find it if you use another model (the D version) Would not have found it without William's link. Just strange that the Samsung guys/gals (neither the dutch nor the us support) could not point me to it. Very glad you could!
