Questions about getting sound to subwoofer

So I hooked everything up to my sr5003. I only have a 2.1 setup right now due to some space issues, but it's fine with me since I mainly enjoy music. Anyways, so i have my fronts hooked up to the appropriate channels and i have the subbed hooked up to the subwoofer preout.

Now, watching movies, and such (Hell Freezes Over DVD), I get sound out of the sub. But when I play games on my xbox or watch a dvd like....the simpsons, and satellite tv, I get no subwoofer thumpin love. Everything sounds great, ran the audyssey thing very accurately. But I'm assuming that it's only sending signals to the sub if the source has ".1" in there instead of filtering everything above a certain frequency from the original source.

Also, this might be why but when I run audyssey, it likes to put my speakers as large and put my bass settings to mixed with a cross over of 60hz. I forget if I get my sub sound back if I manually set my fronts to small and a cross over of 80hz. I'm just going by what audyssey thinks is correct (I've done it a lot of times to make sure and read guides from avs forums).

Need help if I screwed something up. Thanks ahead of time to the gurus.

Also, when I left the surround type option on auto and it usually picked stereo when i put in a CD. So the sub never kicks in, I cycled through (Dolby prologic, virtual surround, etc) them and still nada. I know the sub works because when i play my eagles dvd and select the DTS track, it's definitely there.

Based on the Audyssey guides, I got the impression that Audyssey tries to detect the -3dB point and then if it's low enough it sets the speakers to large. If you want to get the sub going for sources without an LFE track, you'll need to manually select small and a crossover point. This does not screw up the Audyssey calibration.

Section VII from the guide here has tips for after calibration including crossover / bass settings.

(As suggested, it's much easier to read in word doc form)

If I do change them to small, does this affect the sources that did have an LFE track? (ie. speakers no longer go that low)

I guess I can go home and relisten to both again.

I believe that if you set them to small, the subwoofer will play back the LFE track and additionally the low frequency information from the speaker tracks now.

Note 1 at the bottom of the guide goes into detail about how large vs. small is selected by Audyssey.

Okay that makes sense. I'll prob play around with it when I get home and try the crossover at 80hz. Thanks!

I hope that works out. I actually ended up biting the bullet on a replacement for my obsolete pre-pro so I'll probably be experimenting with Audyssey later this week as well.

what'd you end up gettting?!

After much debate and research, I orderd a refurbished Onkyo 876 that will hopefully end up at a final cost of $615 to me if all goes according to plan.

the other option would be to use the crossover in your sub if you feel it's ample. run the speaker wires through the sub and set the fronts to large and LFE through fronts. of course that all depends on receiver and sub. this might make it easier in general as it is only a 2.1 as you won't have to use the dolby settings and such to get it all functioning.
