No one is forcing them to be mod... They can quit anytime. If they are paid, well, I am paid to put up with BS too. The only difference, DuPont is my employer, not AT.
They are not paid, you have been her long enough to know that.
I am one for cracking down on the neffers and useless posts. And I mean hard. It will cause a lot of hurt feelings but so what, if you don't like it, go somewhere else.
What does surprise me is that Anand hasn't had them crack down. It is his name on the front page. He is trying to run a respectable website and is now a married man. It's a shame that he would allow this board to become a joke and drag his reputation and creditability down with it.

:disgust:

I think the smart people of the world understand that the forums do not express Anand's opinion or thoughts on matters related to technology, and if they take a sonz70 thread about being an escort, and assume that to mean Anand is a hooker by night, or pimps one out, well, they're not the ones in charge anywhere, anyways.

Probably already been said, but the simplest way would be to can any subforum that has nothing to do with hardware...: OT, P&N, FS/T, Hot Deals. Enforce a strict, Stay on Topic moderation policy... Fixed...

Enjoyable still, sure. Drop in membership, undoubtedly. With 120K+ members, it is very difficult to control what the people should say, if Anand were to dictate what the content of forum postings were to be. I think that's why there's never been such a crackdown as we're seeing today/this weekend.

EDIT:well it saddens me to see that what i said appears to have been ignored.
You mean you were wrong and I was right? 😕
😉

no. just that the mods appear to have agreed with you and not me. I stand by what i said regardless, and even right now i see pretty much NO difference in OT (except for the threads sparked by the events of the day)...it's business as usual, except for the parodies.

So i guess with a regrettable and imo unecessary loss of membership we've fixed perhaps the only legitmate complaint going, the parody problem in OT...and that could have been fixed by saying 'ok, we'll ban you for posting parodies'...

End result=good, but i think it could have been handled without getting people's backs up...

EDIT: to blakeatwork, the problem with OT is that by it's very nature it doesn't have a specific topic, read the description of it and that much is clear...

All OT requires in common sense.
The Mods stated that time and time again within the smackdown thread.

Maybe things will settle down over the next couple of weeks, no that the fur flew and some of the idiots/trolls/etc were found to be wanting in courtesy and common sense.
Too many felt that rules should not apply to them, maybe the overall value of AT will increase because of this rampage.

you both make sense, in differing aspects...

Outside of my suggestion of removing non-Hardware subforums, dug's suggestion of a concrete set of bannable offences (I know, it'd be a hell of a list), would go a looong way to settling down the immaturity displayed in the last year or so (anyone remember Grasshopper?).

The Mod thread felt like a bug zapper... you just knew some people were going to open up and rip the Mods, regardless of the potential, and often bannable, consequences. I do feel bad for Nebor, as he tried to express his opinions, but it was unfortunately the wrong place and time to get it done. He most definitely would have been better served letting whomever the mods are cool their heels, and then PM them. At that point, they were just looking for any excuse to ban, and people just kept flying into the pretty light.

And yeah, OT was a really nice place once upon a time, we could discuss religion, current events(P&N or whatever), or just silly stuff, and while feelings certainly ran hot sometimes, it still worked out nicely in the end.
Now, OT is full of the kind of crap threads posted above, it's utterly useless for just about anything exceept raising your postcount.

Personally, I'll blame this on age, of the old timers(and by that I mean the people who were here before FuseTalk was introduced in 99), most are surprisingly old, many over 30 or even 40, kept the maturity level high.
I'd say the average age has dropped by at least 15 years in OT over the last 5 years.

Don't think there's any solution really, OT is lost and that's it.

I'll respectfully disagree with the theme of this thread, and that's an interesting statement...you seem to be saying that in the 'old days' 'silly stuff' was acceptable, but have a problem with 'silly stuff' today...

You can still have a perfectly civil and sensible conversation in OT, and as i've said before, if you don't like a thread, you don't have to click on it or post in it...and if you desire you can always go running to the mods 😉

At least we don't hurl buckets of abuse at each other like in P&N...I think that OT is still a very nice and friendly place, i'd have at least a dozen regular OT posters i'd call mates 🙂

Finally i'd note that a few of the people who are complaining about the 'death' of OT don't regularly contribute (positively or otherwise) there that i see...i'm glad you're taking such an interest but i think the majority of the people who regularly contribute don't share your pessimism.

It's just my 2c at the end of the day, but there it is.

EDIT:well it saddens me to see that what i said appears to have been ignored.

Thing is, nearly all of the old timers stopped posting there long ago.
I used to be quite active there back then, it was a very enjoyable forum, half the posts weren't just useless crap(YAGT, YACT, Look at me!!!!111 and other assorted crap like that), most of the people who post there now never saw the old OT(or Non GHW).

Of course, another part is that the forum is so damn big these days, 130,000 accounts, even if just 30,000 of those posters are somewhat active that's over 10x the size it was back then assuming every registered account had an active poser behind it back then.
It just isn't a friendly neighbourhood anymore, it's a bigass city full of loons.
