Well, the Mods are the biggest/baddest boys on the block. Live with it, pay your respects and do not attempt to cross the line. Majority of the people here have no problems with the Mods; maturity possibly?

I think it is degrading on both ends. When I came here in 2001, the Mods were very professional and didn't put up with crap. They were very silent, except for their occasional one liners.

We must have had an influx of new mods this past year, because their responses have become a lot more sporadic and vocal, with a definite feel of arrogance. What the hell is this: "We are a huge site. We have neither the time nor the patience to babysit you.". I think this particular newbie-mod really shines a bad light on the whole mod crowd.

No need for replies like this. A proper response would have been to post a link to the Forum rules, say something along the lines of "No more discussions about Mods please.", lock and sticky the thread, and leave it be. Instead we get a huge angry paragraph about manners and parents.

I think i'd have to agree with this. I'm new here, and definitely no posting-saint myself, but when I saw that Mod response I got a bad feeling. A spot-on, mature and efficient mod doesn't feel the need to elaborate (pointlessly, I might add) by saying:

f you need further advice and guidance, then your parents and schools have failed you, miserably. f you need further advice and guidance, then your parents and schools have failed you, miserably.

We are a huge site. We have neither the time nor the patience to babysit you. You may have been the center of your parents existence, unable to do any wrong in their eyes. We are not your parents.

Is there a thread where the moderators introduce themselves to the community and tell people a little bit about themselves, i.e. how they came to be moderators in the first place? I'm starting to wonder a bit about these guys.

I think they're sick of dealing with all the crap they have to put up with.

No one is forcing them to be mod... They can quit anytime. If they are paid, well, I am paid to put up with BS too. The only difference, DuPont is my employer, not AT.

I agree

I do not know how a new member can get a warning/ban for snide remarks similar to the one that mods just made... Yet, it is ok for the mods to do this? I guess that is my complaint with the whole ordeal. The Mods made a personal attack, and in my opinion, that is not cool.
That's not a personal attack, it's true statement. I think they ought to get a lot tougher and do a wholesale ban on the idiots who clog up Off Topic with their childish BS.

They are not paid, you have been her long enough to know that.
I am one for cracking down on the neffers and useless posts. And I mean hard. It will cause a lot of hurt feelings but so what, if you don't like it, go somewhere else.
What does surprise me is that Anand hasn't had them crack down. It is his name on the front page. He is trying to run a respectable website and is now a married man. It's a shame that he would allow this board to become a joke and drag his reputation and creditability down with it.

I agree...well said.

Guys a great many of us have never had a run in or a threat from a mod (myself included). Just as they said, use your common sense. Dont come in here acting like a big tough guy, who doesn't have to listen to anyone.

Golden rule comes to mind. Follow it and its all good 🙂

Why do you feel compelled to nef in FI?

That is one of the best things I have ever read a mod post...

thank you so very much. I mean that, sincerely!

Why do you feel compelled to nef in FI?

You realize that a response to a nef is a nef in itself, right?

Oh, and just to answer that one, it's probably just the defiance involved. It probably boosts the lad's ego.

Does it boost your ego to have neffers banned? 😀

I think i'd have to agree with this. I'm new here, and definitely no posting-saint myself, but when I saw that Mod response I got a bad feeling. A spot-on, mature and efficient mod doesn't feel the need to elaborate (pointlessly, I might add) by saying:

I agree with every word the mod wrote.

ArchAngel777: The same can be said to you. You don't have to be a member here. You can quit at any time. It's great that you are paid to put up with other people's BS (most people are). The point is (and people don't seem to get it) that THE MODS ARE NOT PAID. They put up with a lot idiots whose main purpose in life seems to be to piss as many people off as they can in a very short period of time.

I'm am not one to force my opinions on others. I come here to have a good time, maybe laugh (or cry), meet some new people, get advice, give advice, or just plain waste some time. I for one am getting sick of the dumbasses who think it is their god-given right to ruin the fun for everyone else. I for one am grateful of the job the mods are doing. I DO NOT ENVY THEM AT ALL.

MODS: I think these boards are almost at critical mass. Some toe-stepping (or smashing) needs to be done and I have complete faith that you guys/gals can do it. I can see where your frustration comes from and I will go out on a limb and speak for most of the AT forums: We are behind you 110%

Now some will say 'Ass Kisser' or some other equally dumb remark, but I couldn't care less.

/end rant

I fail to see any truth to the idea that the forums are in a mess or a worse state than usual...certainly in the forums i frequent, OT has been pretty mild and sensible generally recently (no worse or better than normal) and Video is a MUCH nicer place after that sticky was put up, so unless Technical Support, or DC have recently seen a rash of bad behaviour, spamming, and general asshattery then that claim is a load of bulldust...oldsmoboat, SupaDupaCheez do you have any proof to back up what you are saying?

I personally think this could have been handled far more maturely without the relevant Mod resorting to cheap jabs about parenting and schooling (and thats merely my opinion mind you), and i'm still disappointed, not that some Mod felt it appropriate to lock a perfectly valid inquiry, that after all is their prerogative, but that they felt it neccessary to abuse me while doing so, in a fashion that had no factual basis to it...

Mods who lay down the law in a dignified, but appropriately forceful fashion, are to be applauded and respected...and i'm clearly not alone in thinking that at least one mod out there is perhaps letting the side down a little...

And again, i'll reiterate the request to the 'drama queens' in this thread who feel AT is going down the gurgler, and in the words the bloke above me, 'almost at critical mass'; any proof at all to this claim?

exactly...

I love how the old members sits around and talk how it used to be, and guess what you are right, It Is A Big Site, and things change...

Is the neffing and drama queen stuff that bothersome to you olds that you have to point it out everywhere, saying the forums have gone to trash...because I actually only see it in OT? And if I am wrong, please do correct me, OT is meant for those type of colorful types of threads to keep it out of the other forums, so as you say anand can keep his name on the place and keep the other forums clean and on topic...hence the forum name OFF topic.

So olds my question to you is this, please elucidate on how the forums are becoming trashed? because I for one fail to see how they are, maybe your coterie of 1999'ers can tell me, but infortunately, new members join and suddenly it isnt just a place for you and your buds to hang out and then ban everyone that bothers you...

I am not trying to invoke one of your classic stfu n00b thats not what I emant at all things...I am just simply questioning you....were exactly do you see the hole in the ship that is going to bring it down...because some neffing and YAGT's are definately going to cause one of the biggest forums on the internet (and guess what buddy it didnt get that way because of your type of philosophy on hw it should be run) to become as bad as you describe it...

not to mention that the revenue from the forums is probably at an all time high...

and as someone said, you are surpirsed the mods have not cracked down? well maybe they have not for a reason, they read the same forums as you, and as you said this is anands site, obviously he see's nothing wrong with it yet, in the sence of some neffing and stupid drama stuff that goes on, (and if he does, I will glady adhere to the rules like I do now because it is a free forum) and if you do not like what the mods do or do not crack down on, guess what? as you said its not oldstech.com

so as you called me and sonz the forum saviour, you sir need heed your own advice...

You really need to learn to read. I never said that.
Things don't always change for the better and decisions are not always right. I still think we will see a change/trend back to the good old days.
AT was never intended for nef threads. It was intended for car, stereo, work, etc threads.
Not http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=38&threadid=1711013&enterthread=y
and
http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=38&threadid=1711070&enterthread=y
Those thread should be locked and the posters given a week off.

The "3 Big Neffers" that have posted in this thread can't understand how the forums have gone downhill and demand proof, yet one has been here about a year and the other two joined a little over 6 months ago.

The mods answer should be stickied at the top of every forum for a couple of weeks with the last part bolded.

Okay - here are some examples just from yesterday:
Oh gee help ME!!!
I started 1 thread
You Friggin Punks
Want More
as well as another thread that was deleted because of references to Natural American Inj*** and Ni****. All of these were threads posted in OT by the same member in just one day. Really worthwhile stuff, eh?

Also yesterday in OT (despite the fact that parody threads usually get shut down):
policemans are so annoying.
Alians arso sooo annoying
Canadeans are so annoying
freshmens are so annoying.

Also yesterday in OT a 5-yr member was warned of an impending vacation because of his threads.

All that and I don't even read 90% of the threads in OT so no telling what else went on.

Rediculous [sic]!

I don't mind silly attention whoring threads. Sometimes they're fun. But I 100% agree that PARODY threads need to stop. I really think no questions asked no explanations given 1 week vacations need to be implemented. Which is too bad because leftyman's postcount would come to a screeching halt. 😛

There are so many ppl here that are saying "i don't mind XXX kinda threads" and others saying "I think XXX should be locked/banned/vacationed"

I am not an 'old timer' but have certainly seen a change in the content on OT. And I think the main problem is not that the mods are all of a sudden cracking down. I think it is a case of stuff getting by for so long, that when it is finally stopped it seems harsh.

I believe that OT was meant to be a place that was a little more personal and contained topics that did not fit into any other category.... NOT a free for all where ppl got to discuss how often they masturbated, couldnt get a date their anal habits, or waste endless bandwidth being juvenile by starting a thread to post one word.

Bottom line.. this site is a business, and there are major companies that pay to advertise here. It is also open to men, women and children of all ages. I don't think it was intended to be a ...lets see who can push the line the furthest with lack of decorm and common sense... forum. There are plenty of other places on the internet for that. And I think things have gotten a bit backwards. Instead of thinking "wow one by got the mods" when the occasion lapse in taste thread stayed open, ppl are freaking out when one actually gets locked.

I think a lot of people would have no problem with bannings/locks as long as they enforced the same rules for everyone, instead of selective enforcement.

Actually I think we do a pretty good job of locking and deleting the offending threads, especially in the morning after the usual suspects fill Off Topic up with their immature and foolish threads. However most of us don't have the time to read all the topics and some may slip through. This is were notification via PM or a post here in FI from the members helps.
