Questions about forums

sonz70

Banned
I and quite a few others do alot of trading is FS/FT thread. As mods continue to ban people, with no reasons given, aswell as it seeming personal reasons, and reasons outside the forums, the questions for myself and many others becomes; what are the rules? Anand has a very huge, and popular site, than is starting to get a black eye from the abuse of mods in the forums. The majoirty of your users are enthusiasts, who also visit thew forums periodically. Why would they come to Anandtech if they have a high chance of being baned for nothing? And potentially loosing business/bad heat ect in FS/FT. I am not calling anyone specifically, I would just like to see a set of rules, or what is allowed and not allowed, so we are all not left guessing.

Thank you

I agree that the mods need to maintain a sort of professionalism, that they usually do maintain, so like I said this needs to be worked out, and Anand has signed on so I assume it is being discussed...

I myself am just a n00b here, and I only lurked for two years, but i do know quite a lot about these forums and I just hope it gets worked out...

so anyways /end drama

Thank you for your deep concern, but we are doing just fine BECAUSE the majority of our membership are enthusiasts and not self important drama queens.

-If you employ good manners and your own God given common sense, you will never even notice us.
-If you get carried away and want to skate on the edge of acceptability in how you treat us and the others here, there will be consequences.
-If you are determined to be a prolonged, oppostiional pain in the ass because you are too immature to restrain yourself, over and over again, you will eventually lose the privelege of posting here.
-If you need further advice and guidance, then your parents and schools have failed you, miserably.

We are a huge site. We have neither the time nor the patience to babysit you. You may have been the center of your parents existence, unable to do any wrong in their eyes. We are not your parents.

Though I chose your answer as the one, I do not believe the reference to being imature was very imature in itself. Where you have to realise is that many people, of many different walks of life, and many lvls of senorities in office, corporations or other business post/visit here, and as a human can become upset/angry at other people. As long as there is no Mod bias, and that people will not be banned for personal grudges than that is fine. I think as a majority the modes do a very good job of the forums; but as in everything, one bad thing can ruin it all. Thank you for clearing this up though

Part of the problem is the first two posters. Pushing and flaunting the rules has pushed the Mods to (if not over) the edge and some old timers are paying the price.

Bingo! :cookie: for you.

Yet they come to Forum Issues to discuss the problems as they see them and pretend to be the "Forum Saviors". It's so obvious to a few of us, but they think they are doing us a favor.

Sonz70 and Son of a N00b aren't speaking for me.

...oh and keeping with the flow, my first name is Jeremy. 😉

Or we could post in ATOT over and over like everyone was doing, and getting people banned, threads locked ect ect. It was not better to come and post in Forum issues?

I think the point sonz was trying to make is that the 'aura of mystique'/'iron curtain of secrecy' that some of the mods like to enforce (ie. don't talk about us/joke about us/speculate about us/criticise us...or we'll ban you...for breaking these unwritten rules) isn't a particularly fairly or accountably appiled process 'occasionally' (and i stress that word)...and a slightly more detailed and helpful set of rules in this area would be very much appreciated...🙂

Oh and i really didn't appreciate being called a 'OT Night Crew Troll' by whichever mod was on duty a few nights ago thanks, as far as i'm aware i don't troll, i'm a regular contributor outside OT, and the topic i raised, as to why an 'escort' should be effectively allowed to advertise herself in OT (called spam in any other case), was a perfectly legitimate one and certainly not deserving of that abuse.

Most bans happen because of the lack of common sense.

The bannees know what the limits are, what should be acceptable and attempt or continue to push those limits to see what they can get away with. Then people whine when they get slapped down for misbehaving.

Well, the Mods are the biggest/baddest boys on the block. Live with it, pay your respects and do not attempt to cross the line. Majority of the people here have no problems with the Mods; maturity possibly?

I think it is degrading on both ends. When I came here in 2001, the Mods were very professional and didn't put up with crap. They were very silent, except for their occasional one liners.

We must have had an influx of new mods this past year, because their responses have become a lot more sporadic and vocal, with a definite feel of arrogance. What the hell is this: "We are a huge site. We have neither the time nor the patience to babysit you.". I think this particular newbie-mod really shines a bad light on the whole mod crowd.

No need for replies like this. A proper response would have been to post a link to the Forum rules, say something along the lines of "No more discussions about Mods please.", lock and sticky the thread, and leave it be. Instead we get a huge angry paragraph about manners and parents.

It might be a huge angry thread but it is the truth. In the year I've been here I have witnessed more and more idiots posting nonsense and whining when they do get slapped down. I'm sure you are frustrated, the Moderators are frustrated and anybody who comes here looking for intelligent conversation is frustrated. The threads about bodily functions, masterbation, denegrating women and total nonsense are becoming more prevelent with each passing day, especially at night when there are no Mods on duty to check them. When the Mods do lock them or delete them there is the usual cry from the chronic complainers about the heavy handedness of the Mods and of course there are the malcontnents who come here just to stir up the kiddies. Maybe Anandtech has become to big to handle effectively. Just like everything else it seems when something becomes popular the idiots flock to it and ruin what was once a good thing.

I am most amused by the fact the biggest complainers about over-moderations are the members who are to blame for the very thing.

I'm not sure why I decided to even reply in this thread because it isn't my fight, and I don't disagree with the mods at all about banning people and locking threads. 😛 I just don't like the recent attitude.

But the recent attitude is in direct relation to the recent active members of this forum.

So? 😕 I thought the community was about the people, not the person. If they're damaging the community, then the community will say something and the mods can ban with due justice - without using rude gestures to counter a polite inquiry.

If you think that was just a "polite inquiry", then you must not be familiar with some of sonz70's past postings. The phrase "self important drama queens" didn't just pop out for no reason. 🙂

lol, the mods have always laid the smack down on the idiots, either by a humorously barbed quip or a blunt force bark. The Mean Mod was here long before this latest crop of fools arrived.

It was just an inquiry, I have toned down my posts since last asked; seeying as none of the lifers who do nothing but sit around and complain about the old days were willing to ask about it in FI, the correct forum for this, I don't see why you are complaining.

I think i'd have to agree with this. I'm new here, and definitely no posting-saint myself, but when I saw that Mod response I got a bad feeling. A spot-on, mature and efficient mod doesn't feel the need to elaborate (pointlessly, I might add) by saying:

f you need further advice and guidance, then your parents and schools have failed you, miserably. f you need further advice and guidance, then your parents and schools have failed you, miserably.

Is there a thread where the moderators introduce themselves to the community and tell people a little bit about themselves, i.e. how they came to be moderators in the first place? I'm starting to wonder a bit about these guys.

I agree

I do not know how a new member can get a warning/ban for snide remarks similar to the one that mods just made... Yet, it is ok for the mods to do this? I guess that is my complaint with the whole ordeal. The Mods made a personal attack, and in my opinion, that is not cool.
