I've been using the stock Athlon XP retail cooler and just ordered a thermalright copper heatsink and a fan to go with it. I used artic silver 3 between the retail cooler and cpu do i have to do anything special to get it off the cpu and reapply the stuff? Or can i just get some more artic silver onto the new heatsink and just slap it on? and am i suposed to have the fan blowing air down into the heatsink or sucking air through it and blowing up?

Everybody has different opinions on blow vs suck. Generally, if you have lots of airflow into your computer, you should blow.
Usually though, the temps dont different much if at all. Just test either one and find what works best.

I just use isopropyl alcohol and a few cotton swabs to remove the arctic silver 3. make sure though that you clean it thouroughly
as AS3 is conductive to make sure you don't fry your cpu =/

Only conductive under very high pressure, and the only high pressure is between the heatsink and the core where it is safe.

Artic Silver could still cause problems if you were sloppy enough to get it on bridges. Also, try to use some sort of cloth that doesnt leave fibers or lint when you clean the HS.

Cotton swabs that are wet usually won't leave fibers behind... any loose ones would be washed off when you dip it in the bottle.

Anyway, I use fingernail polish remover to clean the old thermal compound off, then isopropyl alcohol to clean it when I'm done. Both would work well to clean it, but the nail polish remover works faster... I bet I'm the only guy to ever buy nail polish remover from the drugstore next to my house.

I bought nail polish remover from the drug store I work at part time. They thought I was kidding when I wanted to buy it.
