So I was heading towards Chicago today when I hit the first automatic toll. It was $.60 and I threw it in. No big deal right? Wrong. The light stayed red. so I chucked another quarter in. Still red. Chucked a dime in. Still red, so I took off.

Should I be worried about getting one of those toll violation things in the mail? It's not like I can PROVE i paid it. There's an option to just mail in the toll before you get the violation so I may consider doing that. $0.60 is a lot cheaper than whatever the fine would be.

That situation got me thinking about another question. What if the light was stuck on the green "Thank You" sign? Would you get a toll violation for driving through and not paying, even though the light was green?

The latter would probably never happen but I've had what happened to you happen to me before and I've run it. I think you get something like 2 or 3 freebees before they send a notice to your house. Even then, they just ask you to pay, you don't get boned or anything.

Edit: PS get an iPass bro, worth every penny not to have to fvck with change or lines.

Good question.

I have a feeling that they'd need video footage of you not paying in order to prosecute, and the green-light thing wouldn't count either because the equipment was obviously damaged.

Yeah i've considered the iPass. So if i don't mail in the $.60, and they send me a notice in the mail, it'll just be for the toll? I thought a hefty fine was added, since I cant really prove that I put money in (doubt the video would show that)

They don't send out collections on individual violations, they wait until there is a sizable amount, around 10 or so. This way when the time comes, state hits you up for $500+ in fines.

I'm up to probably 5 missed tolls (iPass not registering) so far and haven't been notified. But in my situation with having an iPass, I only have to pay the sum of the actual tolls, no fines.

So you are saying i have potentially 8 more free passes? :p just kidding.

Not only do you save time, but the tolls are half of what they are if you pay with money.
