Hello all,

I'm in the process of wanting to upgrade my computer. I built it about 4 years ago with only one upgrade since. The way I built in was in a 3 month time frame. It been a really good computer for gamming, but I think its time for some newer technology.

Specs>>>
asus sabertooth x58 mb
core i7-975@4.3
crucal or corsair 6gb triple channel@1600 6-6-6 timings
msi 2gb 7870 ghz edition gpu
Samsung F3 HD
NXZT phantom case with multiple fans
650w cosair or antec psu
sound blaster titanium sound card
Noctula heatsink
windows 7 64bit
resolution 1920x1080

I upgraded the gpu about 2 years ago from a 460 and replaced the psu about the same time. Had the cpu under water when first built but the pump slowing down and went with this monster noctula heatsink.

I am in the process of saving up for a r9 290 and then save for a new cpu, mb, ram. thought about a amd 8350.

I want to use my case and anything I can salvage.

What are your thoughts?

Budget?

An FX-8350 would be slower than your current CPU 95% of the time (being generous to the FX).

Replace/sell the I7-975 and get a Xeon X5650 for 6 core goodness @ 4.8Ghz. Add R9 290 when ready.

My budget is in the $400 to $500 range for a upgrade first time around, with another upgrade planned 3 month or so later. The Xeon X5650 like my 975 is older technology? I have a new 950 and was going to put it in another pc, but the MB are expensive and hard to come by. Besides the 6 core of the Xeon X5650 and a bit higher clock what would be the advantages? Also a cpu, mb would make more sense than the gpu right now? Thanks for your replys.

Ok I was looking for a Xeon X5650. There not to expensive, but its not listed on the QVL. The MB doesn't support it. Only the 900 cpus.

Thanks burpo! I have another question. With my asus sabertooth mb, I used the auto OC feature to get the 4.3 oc. Will this still work with the Xeon X5650?

Yup! Board has a GREAT Power section! I just set XMP Profile & cranked up BCLK & Voltage. Simple & KILLS any AMD.
Best overclock @ 5Ghz..

Thanks everyone! I'm going to think about this. I really would like to move forward rather than backwards on this, but it is a possibility.
