what's so bad about a 754 processor if you don't plan upgrading? Does it perform worse than the 939 processor?

No in fact a socket 754 3200 is faster then a socket 939 3200. But like you pointed out upgrade path is limited. That and you can get a Athlon64 3000+ 939 pretty cheap now. Tie that with a nForce4 Ultra board and you have a great system that can be upgarded to dual core Athlon64's
 
I have a gt and a xp-3000+ and I'm planning to get a cpu and 2 years later I will ditch the whole pc and get a new one. and what is the difference between the 250 Gb and nforce 3 ultra?
 
And isn't the 3000+ a bit slow? I'm looking at a 3200+ venice of the 3400+. And which one is better? 3400+ newcastle or the clawhammer? the clawhammer sounds better and the fx series uses them.
