Everyone signed it out of fear of being "unpatriotic" post-9/11. No one read the bill properly. After having had time to digest the Patriot Act, many are now against it and want it to expire or at least remove the unconstitutional sections. This includes Republicans.

This does not illustrate a positive demonstration of the critical-thinking and desicion-making skills of our elected leaders then, does it.

I think that you din't give the reps enough credit for intelligence. They probably knew enough of what was in the bill to know that it is frighteningly authoritarian. They probably didn't want the bad optics of opposing it during that particular time, relying on the sunset clause in order to rationalize it to themselves.

I agree. I also think we should just go ahead and let the FBI and CIA install cameras in all our houses to make sure we are all acting in accordance to some "ideal citizen" standard. This whole constitution and freedom thing has gone on long enough, IMO.

You're joking, right? Maybe you'd be OK with a government agent living with you 24/7 and recording your every detail and storing it into a central repository. Maybe they should record all you telephone calls, emails, IMs, and Anandtech posts as well. I mean, if you're not doing anything wrong, then you have nothing to worry about, right?

At what point is the price of "security" worth giving up your rights and liberties?

I think we should have mandatory cameras in our homes and cars and we should wear GPS trackers at all times. I mean if you arent doing anything illegalyou have nothing to worry about

For those of you who find yourselves nodding...I'll just say I worry about what the government might make illegal next, and what the penalties might be.
 
I wonder if the terrorist like the PATRIOT act? Using terror to limit out own freedoms is part of their goals.

I have nothing to worry about personally under any law, but stripping freedoms provided to us by the Constitution does worry me.

The act was a knee jerk reaction shoved into law by a emotional congress and president. Parts are supposed to expire, as they should. They were temporary measures to fight an unknown evil.
 
You're all full of shiite. I doubt the Patriotic Act has had a single impact on any of your lives.

If you're not a criminal, the most you have to fear is some inconvenience. The Patriotic Act has busted lots of Islamic goons plotting terrorist acts, and I think it needs to go even further.
