Everyone signed it out of fear of being "unpatriotic" post-9/11. No one read the bill properly. After having had time to digest the Patriot Act, many are now against it and want it to expire or at least remove the unconstitutional sections. This includes Republicans.

This does not illustrate a positive demonstration of the critical-thinking and desicion-making skills of our elected leaders then, does it.
(OT - Howdy conjur. I tried as best as I could to stay out of this crazy forum, but here I am in P&N anyway 😉 )

You're joking, right? Maybe you'd be OK with a government agent living with you 24/7 and recording your every detail and storing it into a central repository. Maybe they should record all you telephone calls, emails, IMs, and Anandtech posts as well. I mean, if you're not doing anything wrong, then you have nothing to worry about, right?Originally posted by: ntdz
i agree, i dont think it should go further though. If you aren't a criminal then you have absolutely nothing to worry about.Originally posted by: Garuda

And there it is..."If you aren't a criminal then you have absolutely nothing to worry about." I think that's what the Catholic Church used to say to "heratics" before it boiled them in oil.

I think we should have mandatory cameras in our homes and cars and we should wear GPS trackers at all times. I mean if you arent doing anything illegalyou have nothing to worry about

You're all full of shiite. I doubt the Patriotic Act has had a single impact on any of your lives.
If you're not a criminal, the most you have to fear is some inconvenience. The Patriotic Act has busted lots of Islamic goons plotting terrorist acts, and I think it needs to go even further.
