Question: wireless networking and internet connection sharing

I am looking @ possibly setting up a 2 peer wireless network. What I'd like to do it is simply get 2 802.11b cards, and then set up internet connection sharing. My question is: do I need an access point/ router? the range is under 300 ft, around 100. I was told that I may need a router to control the traffic, but the person was not 100%. Any and all input is appereciated.

you should have no problem connecting 2 pc's with just the wireless cards (i am not sure about the exact procedure to do this, but once the cards are installed, you should be able to see the other machine).

wireless is just another medium....it would be similar to setting up the connection via x-over cable to 2 ethernet nics.

I have a friend who is making the same attempt, and not having a lot of luck. He lives about 3 hours away, so I haven't had a chance to look at his configuration yet. I know that you can do internet connection sharing over a crossover cable, so I wouldn't think there would be any reason you couldn't do two wireless nics w/o an access point, but like I said, I haven't had a chance to look at it yet.

Ad-Hoc connection is not as good as ?Normal? Wireless Network working through Wireless Cable/DSL Router. In the past it saved few $$$ by buying two Client Cards instead of Wireless Cable/DSL Router. Currently the Wireless Cable/DSL Routers are so inexpensive (some are less than $40) that it would qualify as ?Silly? to do Internet through double NAT Quirky Ad-Hoc.

If you already have a Router, buy a Wireless Cable/DSL Router and use it as an Access Point.

Well being the cheap bastard that I am, I bought 2 siemens nics from my work..( cheap as hell like$23 a piece). Should be to figure out :sun:

Doesn't it mean you have to use ad-hoc connection and everybody else in your neighbor can do that to your computer and share your bandwidth?

I am not clear myself. In fact, I have one PC connected to the router through a wireless adapter and I am still worrying that leaves the door open to those who try to ad-hoc connect to me. Can someone tell me if I should be concerned?
