Question. Why is a mixed black/white child always considered to be black?

If a character is half human, half elf, then the humans call him an half-elf, but the elves call him a half-human...

I'm guilty of calling Sarah Jessica Parker a horse...in truth, she's only half horse

I say hay! or neigh on that one.😉

my little one is 1/4 cubana, 1/4 puerto rican - you can bet she'll be getting all that free money when it's time for college.

Of course, when we fill out the app at the country club, she's caucasian

But they aren't pure/black either....

This, along with the water is only water post are perfect demonstrations of real racism. Calling your buddy "******" isn't racism-- subconscious association of white with purity and black with impurity IS.

yup, that's what I was going after. not pure white. but pure as in "pure" white. Along the lines of how once you lose your virginity you'll never be "pure" again. I'm not white nor a racist in anyway btw.

You don't have to be white or racist to think in a racist way. It's a part of American culture.

I'm not quite following.

He said that they weren't pure white.
I said that they aren't pure black either.

So if they are neither pure black or pure white, how can one be labeled one or the other?

He was making a joke, I believe. Ever heard of a Nazi talk about the "pure" Aryan race? He's simply saying that once you add other genetics to the gene pool, it's no longer pure or perfect. Thus, the mix is only worthy of the lesser title.

actually what i meant as in pure... is
we dont have this problem with dogs... you are either pure bread or you are mutt.

same thing with people... your either pure bread european (caucasian) or your not.
your either pure bread african or your not.
the real problem is there is currently no acceptable term that applies to humans that says mixed breed. ie... calling someone a mutt, oreo, halfrican or whatever is not PC. (duh)...but is there ever going to be a PC term for mixed breed? probably not. Ipso facto... these people are then labelled by their minority half rather than their common half.

I didnt mean it to be racist comment... just a pure statement of fact.
You're either purebread... or not. Its a clear cut case.

In no way was I attempting to evaluate that one is superior or inferior... of being pure white, pure black, or mixed... its just a simple fact that all 3 exist and are distinctly different. whether you like it or not...race exists.

and just because i think that race exists... does not make me racist or a bigot.

It's due to appearance, unfortunately.

I have some friends who are half white/half asian, and they are considered "white" due to their appearance.

Unfortunate, but I suppose the dominant gene determines the ethnicity...

The chicken came from the egg.

Obviously the egg didn't just appear out of nowhere. 😉

Probably a stupid question, but why does everyone always call a mixed black/white kid black? Halle Berry is 50/50, but she's always considered black or African-American.

Tiger Woods is part black/part Asian, but people only consider him to be black. So is it just safe to see that if you're mixed and you have the slightest tint of brown that you're considered black?

Anyway, just mindless ramblings. Just caught the tail end of Tucker Carlson talking about this last night on MSNBC.

i think they call it based on the colour of hte person. if they are more dark than white, call them black. if they are more white than dark, call them white.

same applies for mixed asian kids. if they tend to have predominatntly asian properties in their appearance u call them asian...or if not, all them white.

exactly

Well they usually look more black than white. and you dont go up to them and say, what heritge are you? What does your mom look like? your dad?.... What do i call the kid? hey kinda black kinda white kid, come here. If he looks kinda black, ill say hes black. IF i know hes not, i wont consider him to be. Black overrides white usually, and you usually think they might just be a light black kid. oh friggin well , the world keeps spinnin and life goes on. who cares...

I think it's related to which race is the minority and experiences discrimination at the hands of the majority race. If the majority was pure african with really dark skin and whites were a small minority then mixed kids with light skin would identify more with whites, and would be grouped as white by the 'pure' blacks.

Just one of those things like last names.

I will always be considered hispanic because of my last name even though it look just as anglo as most anglo people.

LOL, reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Elaine thinks that she's dating a black guy and he thinks he's dating a Hispanic girl.

"So we're just a couple of white people?"
"Wanna go to the Gap?"

I would kind of put this in the same gray area as how everyone calls anyone of latin decent "spanish."

Like my GF is "spanish" but she's from nicaraguan. My best friend is "Spanish" but he's half Spanish (from spain) and half mexican. The chick that cuts my hair is "Spanish" but she's half mexican and half argentine.

I think it's kind of like how you say to a person of latin decent "oh so your spanish, where are you from/whats your background?". It's like you could say to a black person "oh so your black, what is your background?"

My EX-GF was mixed. She was half jamaican and half russian. She considered herself mixed. However when it came time to forms (as others have said) she would put black. Just like my current girlfriend would put Spanish on theh form and not "other" since there is no Nicaraguan option 99% of the time.
