Question..why did my temps rise 4C when I add a harddrive

I simply added a 80G PATA IDE drive to the system and my idle and load temps rose exactly 5C across the board.

The CPU usage did not increase only the temps....does that make sense to anyone?

Original temps 39C.....44C
Now 44C....49C

Still not bad but its strange. any comments are appreciated

HDs put out heat just like any other components. Also, it could be blocking or altering the path of some critical airflow, so that would also explain the temp increase.

I can see the case temps rising because of the drive heat dissapation and I can see the PSU temps rise because of voltage draw...I can even agree that air flow may be an added issue (not in my case).

The thing that bugs me is that the CPU temp has risen 5-6C with no additional load.

CPU temp is still dependent on ambient temp inside the case.

Also HDDs affect air flow.

If it raises the ambient (case) temp, it will raise the CPU temp along with it. Think about it, it's the air in your case that is cooling the CPU.

This is dead on...

To the op remember the cooling is a method of conduction. The cpu is being cooled with case air...if the case air temps rise then that means warmer air then before is being used to flow over the heatsinks fins. It will therefore transefr less of the heat then before......


I would likely say look at airflow patterns of the intake and exhaust. Slight adjustments or ducts could get cooler air closer to the cph heatsink again an minmize that...

a point or two.....

the CPU temp rose 5C at start up with the case opened.

I have closed the case and temps are stable exactly as they were with it open. I was very careful with cables and routing during build with 4 thermistor controlled fans and PSU so...are flow is good and below 25db at full load....Pretty happy with that part.

even with the current overclock and the recent increase in Temps I can encode movies for four hours straight at 100% CPU with temps at or below 50C.....still very reasonable dont ya think?

Yep those temps are very safe and fine....

I personally like side intake fans with ducts and modifying cases to hold 120mm fans....quiet but move as much air as 2 80mm fans to one of the 120mm fans....plus the 120mm fans are quieter even without volt modding them...
