Question: Should I BUY a Radeon 9800 pro?

With all of this Radeon 9800 talk I'll be assuming that some of you guys will be buying one. Should I buy one? What are YOUR reasons for getting the 9800? Here is a rundown of my system specs...

P4T533-C
2.53Ghz @ 2.85
512MB PC1066
Gainward Geforce 4 Ti4600 Golden Sample (317/700)
NEC Multisync 1550X LCD monitor - Native Res: 1024x768
SB Audigy 2

I'm a pretty huge gamer (FPS, RTS, RPG, etc) and it would be exciting to see a huge improvement in graphics. I'm not TOO interested in benchmarks but it would be cool to see a nice score in 3dmark. BTW, I can afford to buy the card:) Anyways, what do you people think?

I'd stick with your Ti4600 until we see the 256MB version pop up in a cpl months (I think I read late april/early may release date). Gives me enough time to recover from purcashing the 9700pro, and build up a bit of a cash reserve.

Also, the only 9800pro i've seen for sale is a bit extreme at almost $500 IIRC.

If you are a huge gamer, then I'd say go ahead if you have the money!
The 9800 Pro would give you a very nice upgrade in terms of speed, especially in AA and AF.

Bwahhahaha! You must be new here. ;) On AT, thats like saying you have to be George Steinbrenner to root for the Yankees. LoL! :D

Anyways, at your native res, I wouldn't bother to, not until Doom 3 or a game stresses your GPU at that resolution. A 9700/9800pro will buy you more AA and AF, but nothing noticeable in the way of frames.

If you're having trouble running 1024 with max details though, it would be a worthwhile upgrade. That's why I did, as my Ti4200 Turbo at 310/650 wasn't cutting it with max details at 1280.

hey are they going to make an all in wonder version, I've heard people say "of course they will," but I havent seen anything to indicate its in the works.

I'd wait a little since right now they are really new. Maybe wait a driver release or two so you don't have problems using it.

Also, you might want to consider Doom 3's release in November of this year. At that time, you may need a different card but the 9800 should be able to handle it.

I am royally tempted, but I think I'll hold off. At least for a few more months. My 9700 Pro is more than enough for the time being.

If you've got the money to burn ... than go for it ...

Personally I am gonna stick with my TI4200 until i find a good reason to upgrade.I shall spend more of my disposible income on CDs and DVDs for now.

Shoot, now you guys are really pressing the right buttons - with your GF4's and 9700's and planning to upgrade. Here I still have a measley Ti200 and I'm debating it. Oh well, it's only one moonlighting shift anyway.

I have a Geforce 3 ti500... should I buy a Radeon 9800? I was playing C&C Generals and had to turn my video settings down a lot to make it playable half the time. I don't know if it's a generals problem or a "time for a new video card" problem...

Since you already have a 4600, you should sell it now before it devalues and go for it! Even if you go for a 9700, 9700Pro, 9800 or 9800Pro, you're laughing all the way! If you want to see a really noticable difference from the 4600, I'd go straight to the monster 9800 Pro. ;)
Hope you have a CPU that can keep up! If you're not well over 2GHz, you'd be better off with a 9700 non-pro (forget modding 9500's) and save up for a processor upgrade.

I'm SO glad I don't need such uber-hardware. ;)

If you can afford it, then go for it by all means. It is a really large leap over the Ti4600 in my opinion. There are some drastic performance increases once the resolution gets high and AF/AA are enabled.

Actually, if you want to save a little money, even the Radeon 9700/9700 Pro would be worth the money. They will go down in price as a result of these new releases.
