at the basic package level, same speeds, etc... but earthlink looks like 5bucks cheaper... anyone know why pick one over the other?

Earthlink piggybacks on Time Warner's physical lines. If you have a problem and you're with Earthlink, they might start blaming each other resulting in not getting the problem fixed. I'd pay that extra $5 and go with TWC, that's what I have and it's been painless throughout the 4 years I've had it.

I have Road Runner and it usually works, but only half the time when I want it to...

I call them up and they do a line test and say everything is fine. I could do this pretty much every week had I not grown tired of it.

Earthlink = DSL
Roadrunner = Cable

That was 1-2 years ago, so they might offer different services now.

With Earthlink you are using their software such as an IE branded browser, popup blockers, etc. With TW RR (which is what I use), you're on your own. I don't mind Earthlink but I don't need their tech support nor software.

right, i was investigating purely cable earthlink & RR...

I actually like Optimum Online, but sadly I'm leaving a OO area and coming to a RR area... move expensive, lower top speeds even.

they grab extra customers at a lower price that they otherwise might not normally have

ppl pay a slight premium for TWC brand name, just like ppl pay a premium for (ugh) AOL, which is the same

so much misinformation in here. RR and Earthlink are the same, just one is cheaper than the other. Earthlink is not just DSL, but also has cable through TWC JUST LIKE RR. You don't have to use their software if you don't want to. I have it here in Durham, NC and am totally satisfied with it. At the time I ordered it, it was $5 cheaper than RR but now I think they've gotten to the same pricepoint. I have had it go out once or twice but that was due to construction in the area. I'm billed through TWC just as if it were cable.

I believe RoadRunner was part of TWC but became a separate company and was forced to share the cable with other companies including Earthlink and AOL. IIRC AOL has left the broadband arena and now it's just EL and RR.

Bottom line: get earthlink cuz it's cheaper. No sense in paying more for the same exact service...
