Question regarding upgrading a 2U Rackmount server

We're upgrading a 2U rack for Half-Life 2. For your information, we run a prominent CS community at www.minnesotacs.com, just to point out that it is real 🙂. Well, we're updating it for CS:Source and i've got some questions. The past components aren't fairly new, because the last part was a 900Mhz Athlon. I know that we can use an ATX board on it, but what about a power supply?

I am wondering what type of PSU it most likely would need, not size-wise, but standards. I would probably buy the parts off of newegg, so thats why I thought I would ask. I do not have access to this 2U rack if you want more details, but I can get any details needed from a tech that helps maintain it.

We're looking to put in an Athlon 64 2800+ or 3000+ into it, do you think that would work fine? Other possiblities are a Pentium 4 or Athlon XP. Do you guys have any ideas here for me? We're in the planning stages and we actually have people donate to reach a goal of roughly $400, but some of them want to know what parts we are deciding between. I'm sure some of you have a lot of experience, so please help me out here 🙂. The main question is about the Power Supply type, by the way. Thanks a million!

P.S.
We aren't ordering the parts anytime soon, so i'm completely open to suggestions.

Quite. Plus, if you go down the Xeon route then you'll need an EPS PSU. The case may not take anything but a weird motherboard.

Are you sure a 2U rack won't use a standard ATX board? Just about every 2U rack I can find on Newegg supports ATX motherboards, with specific dimensions 🙂 I'm just thinking because the old server uses a 900Mhz Athlon (Socket A), and I am not aware of any 'weird motherboards' that support that CPU and also would, at the time, enable someone to build a rack relatively cheaply.

I don't know what the specific brand is YET, but it wasn't purchased from a company. The rack was built by my friends a long time ago.
