Question regarding software that requires no OS to run

Have this discussion question I need to answer for my information systems in business class that I can't seem to find in the book.

Here is the question:

Widespread application software that requires no OS threatens the software giant Microsoft. Why.

I don't quite understand the question regarding the part where it says that application software that requires no OS. Does this question mean that an application like WordPerfect could boot in place of an operating system like Windows and allow a person to only perform operations in only one program?

It's a theoretical idea--because then Microsoft would no longer sell copies of its operating system. Or, they could be talking about pr0n...

Think about the killer app. It's the reason people buy computers. Most of the killer apps right now that everyone is supposed to have is Microsoft Office or something like that. Eliminate the OS factor, and you suddenly have a lot more options when choosing an OS.

First of all thats not a question.

second that is not possible, you need an operating system to do many tasks that you probably dont understand if your asking this question.

third eliminating the OS will not eliminate Micrososft it would hurt them very badly but as microsoft is a software company they could easily change focus and roll with the industry no matter where it goes.

<< When I was in high school we had some junk computers that booted into Word Perfect. >>

it still had an OS.

<< second that is not possible, you need an operating system to do many tasks that you probably dont understand if your asking this question. >>

Feasible? Definitely not. Possible? I'm pretty sure it is

if the program does its own memory mangement, disk access etc, youve essentially rolled an OS into the program so no its not possible to write a program like that.

this would be an incredible waste of time and effort, as well as being horrendusly innefficient.

I know, but it would still be an app technically. Consider the question a hypothetical one. Or better yet, "question regarding software that runs on multiple platforms"

i disagree they are different questions, software that can run on multiple platforms and having softawre be their own platform are 2 different things.

Yes it is two different things but for the matter of his question it is irrelevant
