Question regarding 2 Vid cards

I know this might sound like a dumb question but I have to ask!! My sons PC has the NVidia 7300GS card in it..256 MB of memory DDR2...I know this is a VERY budget card so I was eyeballing my old school ATI Radeon X1800XT in the spare PC (512 MB and DDR3) wondering if that would give his PC a kick in the pants or hurt it as far as playing Oblivion and a few games like that..
His processor is a e4500 core 2 duo...4 GB memory...

Of course we can upgrade to a newer card but I figured I might as well ask...

The X1800XT would be better in every situation than a 7300GS. THe X1800XT is comparable to a 7800GTX or a 7900GTX in Shader Intense games.

Thanks for the replies and that link!! Looks like Old school wins, I'll be swapping cards for him tomorrow.

looks like it was already covered that the card is a lot better. if he still wants more performance you could also consider getting a cheap card like a 4670 or 9600GSO for about $50. these cards should be roughly 4x as fast, and you have the CPU power to feed them as well. what resolution is his monitor though? oblivion still lags on my 9800GTX 512mb @ 1920x1200 with everything set to max. i had to disable AA because of it. it's mostly caused by particle effects but i get it when running around outdoors as well sometimes.
