Question re: HDTV Wonder - aspect ratio in DTV fullscreen

I recently switched from a CRT to a 16:10 LCD (Dell 2005fpw). I switched the ATI MMC configuration utility to widescreen monitor, and when I run DTV (HDTV) in fullscreen it stretches the image vertically so there are no black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. In other words, as if I had a 16:9 display. This happens no matter whether I set the aspect ratio to Auto or 16:9. Turning off the widescreen setting just makes it compressed vertically, as if I had a 4:3 or 5:4 display. I've tried fiddling with the Dell image settings in the OSD, but none of these impact the image in DTV.

Any other way to set the correct ratio? I'm running MMC 9.02. Any chance that 9.03 would fix this problem? Right now, it seems as if the 16:10 ratio is not in the software's vocabulary. I can just run in a window and set the aspect ratio to non-fixed and then make the window the correct size, but I'd rather do it in fullscreen.

Thanks for any suggestions

You may have to upgrade, but before you do so make sure your display is recognized as 16:10 in the Catalyst Control Center. There's a box that needs to be ticked that's "I have a 16:10 display" or something.

I don't see any such option in the control center. ATI TV doesn't seem to have much understanding of aspect ratio at all from what I can tell; 4:3 content is always streached or zoomed on my 16:9 display and I can't get piller-boxing no matter what I do. ATI DVD on the other hand has a lot better aspect ratio options.

No, my version of CCC doesn't have any option like that either. There is in ATI MMC Configuration a place to tick "I have a widescreen display" as I mentioned earlier.

Anyway, I guess I'll try updating Catalyst and MMC and see how that works.

Thanks for the response.

Try going into the Catalyst Control Center, Display / Monitor 0 tab, under Troubleshooting. There should be a box that forces your monitor to 1080i or 720p. Does that fix it?

those two checkboxes don't force the screen to those resolutions but rather just add them to the list of avalable options. Besides, he is using a 16:10 screen and both those resoltions are 16:9.

Have you figured it out yet?

One thing you might want to try is to define a custom resolution 16:9 resolution using PowerStrip or an equivalent (which I guess would be like 1680x945 in your case). Then set your monitor to letterbox that resolution. The full screen HDTV image should then display correctly.

The other thing to do is to wait a week or so for 9.06 to be released. It supposedly has a bunch of fixes.

That's why I hate monitors with these weird ratios. And hate resolutions like 1280x1024 when hardly any monitors are 5:4.

Just to revisit this issue for anyone interested:

9.03s don't offer a cure. A widescreen display still seems to mean 16:9 to Multimedia Center. However, 9.03 does allow you to set the ratio in DTV to 1.85:1 which when it displays on my screen, brings it a little closer to what it should be.

And yes, Loopy is right, I can use Powerstrip to create a desktop resolution of 1680 x 945, set the monitor to 1:1 (letterbox) and then DTV will display correctly in fullscreen. So, for now, that's what I'll have to do if I want it to look perfect. Thanks again.

But 17-19" monitors that are 1280x1024 are 5:4 physically . . .
