question re: dual gigabit controller

I just purchased a P5B and it has dual gigabit controllers. If I hook a network printer directly to it and hook up the computer to a gigabit switch; will everyone have access to the printer if the computer is on? Thanks.

Not by default, but that can be accomplished using tools available for free with WinXP Pro. You can use Windows Routing Services to forward packets between the to interfaces. Also, if the local driver supports sharing (99% do) you can just share the printer. In both cases, the system must be on with Windows started, but no user needs to be logged in if configured from an account with Administrator priviledges.

Either way, though, you are better off just expanding your port availability and attaching it to the network like a normal node of the topography.

thanks. I have vista, but I assume the same logic applies re: drivers? I would hook it up directly but my house provides two ports into my office (from the main switching center in the wire closet upstairs) and either can be used as either Cat5 or telephone. Right now both are being used as Cat5, but if the printer can hook up to the network through the computer, it will allow me to connect the 2nd port to the fax part of the printer. my computer is on all the time any way so it should work according to that info (unless I am in linux I guess)
