I have a friend who says he's allowed to listen to music at work, but my workplace, they frown on that.

Sure do. However, out of respect for others I always use headphones.

At my last desk job, I could listen to whatever I wanted without headphones.

Now, my office is basically my desk at home and my car and I do allow myself to listen to music while I work. :D

I listen to my mp3 collection (Entirely ripped from CD's I own of course). I have my own office, so I can keep the volume high enough to hear the music details. People who share offices typically use headphones.

I sell electronics (surround sounds, big screens and the like) We always have some kind of music going, and plenty of DVD's going. I do have my personal collection that I use when I demo. Everyone in the store knows when I am selling, no one else seems to have the nerve to crank AC/DC at ear splitting volume.

EVERYONE likes AC/DC, some just dont know it yet :)

Yes, but I wish they wouldn't. My desk is near a coworker's who plays her radio loudly. She listens to music that I dislike. I started bringing in CD's to drown out the noise from her radio. But I'd prefer to not have to listen to anything when I'm working.

The funny thing is that my boss doesn't like it either, but since this beeyatch is friends with HIS boss's boss, we all have to tolerate her. Oh, did I mention that last Friday she took a 3-hour long lunchbreak? Oh, and she came in late in the morning, and left on time in the evening too.:| Plus she spends HOURS on personal calls EVERYDAY. Meanwhile, the rest of us work like dogs. I could go on and on...
<end rant>

There's nothing explicit against it, but in my work environment it would be considered unprofessional. So no one does it.

Only when there are no patrons in the library, e.g. early on Saturday morning or something like that.
