Question: Overclocking in XP vs. 2000

I noticed something odd during beta 2 of XP and thought I would see if anyone else noticed it as well. Bear with me here.

Before XP I was running 2000 pro w/ SP2, non-ACPI setup. My AXIA would only overclock from 1.00 to 1.33 GHz at default voltage. Anything higher than that would lock up solid within 10 minutes, no matter what voltage was used.

Along comes XP Beta 2 and I decided to try to clock it higher. 1.4 GHz stable as a rock at default voltage under a non-ACPI setup, haven't tried higher than that.

After beta 2 I went back to 2000 Pro for a little while. Once again 1.33 GHz was as high as it would go for me. Voltage didn't help.

I am now running devilsown XP final (don't ask where I got it, just do some digging), Set it up to 1.4 GHz and all is running like a champ again.

So the final tally is:

Win 2000 Pro
Non-ACPI
1.33 (10 x 133) @ Default Voltage - ROCK STABLE
1.40 (10.5 x 133) @ Any Voltage - UNSTABLE

Win XP Pro
Non-ACPI
1.33 (10 x 133) @ Deafult Voltage - ROCK STABLE
1.40 (10.5 x 133) @ Default Voltage - ROCK STABLE
1.46 (11 x 133) @ Any Voltage - UNTESTED

Has anyone else noticed an increase in Overclocking performance under XP compared to 98?

I got that too, except it was a relatively minor overclock. My Pentium III 700 would top out at 980 on Win98/WinMe, with crashing at anything higher. But for some reason XP let me go up to 1008. Go figure.

I am just wondering if this a good example of XP being a "more stable" code base if it is a little less sensitive to OC'ing

Found the same phenomenon between 98SE and 2k a couple months ago. Have a Duron 800 that under 98SE would only get to 100X9.5. Under 2k it'll go to 103x10. KT7-R is the mobo, I know, I need a KT7A-R at least 🙂

I am not suprised that 2000 overclocks better than 98/ME. I am a little suprised that XP oc's better than 2000 though. It sure is a higher resource hog, but the base code is for the most part the same.

Very interesting to see other people having better results under XP.
