Question? - Overclocking 1.4 Athlon on KT7-Raid?

I have a Duron 950 o/c'd to 1100 on an Abit KT7-Raid board. I've decided to wait on the Sledgehammer chip and subsequent boards to upgrade eventually.

So I'm curious as to how far I can overclock a Athlon 1.4 Processor?

All help appreciated!🙂

Reasons for asking:

1. I read in the bios update that there is support for 1.4 Ghz Athlon proc., but for KT7A board.

2. I saw on Paul's KT7 Faq that the 1.4 Athlon can be used on this board, but no overclocking, can't even have the processor unlocked.

3. I trust youz guys and all your helpful info.😀

Thanks, Frank.

I suggest sticking with what you have until your ready to upgrade most off your components,BTW most 1.2-1.4 T-birds come unlocked. I put a 1.4 T-Bird in the KT7 to prove it would run just fine but with lower FSB and I was able to run it@112x12.5=1.4ghz/default Vcore/original bios/stable but it was definitely a waste of the CPU's potential. I wouldn't even bother trying to run an XP on that board(even if it works it'd be a waste) and spending money on a T-Bird wouldn't make a big enough difference to justify the money you spent on it IMO.Note: The bios is known to misreport the FSB on that board and Sandra and WCPUID both had it at 108 and 110 respectively. Furthermore, most agree that 110 FSB or so is about all you can expect on that board.

Thanks for the response DaPunisher. This is actually the final upgrade to my setup (mobo & proc.).

So I thought in the mean time I could slap the fastest proc. available in there to tide me over a while longer.

When you had the 1.4 in the KT7, were you able to overclock it at all? If so, what where your settings and achievments?

Because I was using the original bios,The settings I was using were overclocked to da max for that board 😉 12.5 was the max mutiplier and as stated before the FSB was already about as far as it could go. Also, if I remember correctly the newest bioses only added a above 12.5 option for the multiplier which would most likely have left where I'd set it still the approx. max for the board. EDIT: If you decide to experiment with a T-Bird yourself, please post your results as I'd be interested in hearing if it could have gone further.

Hi!
This is an excellent board you have!
But I think that the fastest you can go is (officially) 1.4 Ghz...
I dont think it will work with Xp's because of the lack of support for 133 Mhz fsb.....
Not sure about new Durons, since they are still using 100 Mhz fsb, they may work with KT133 chipset...
Paul's Kt7 faq rulez...

I like my board too.😀
But officially I'm only supposed to be at 950 Mhz.😉

So I guess my question now changes to:
Has anybody overclocked a 1.4 Athlon on a KT7 board?

Changing title to reflect.

If it is unlocked I don't see why it would matter. I had an unlocked 1100 bird on my KT7-Raid running @1300. The highest multiplier was 12.5 and the FSB set itself to 104. Don't know why the board defaulted to 104 FSB when setting multiplier to 12.5, but it ran fine. Not all 1.2 and 1.4 Athlons come unlocked mind you- you may have to do it on your own. My KR7A-Raid is a great upgrade from my last Abit board!!

I also agree that 110 is the most you could expect on FSB with this board (kt7). Mine was quite stable @108- random lockups above that. Most reasonably expected from a 1.4=> 110FSB*12.5= 1375mhz. Most likely stable combo=> 12.5*108= 1350mhz. I'd take the stability and go 108FSB. Tweak with your system now and see the most stable FSB you get- multiply that times 12.5 and see what you'll have for the 1.4 athlon.

Why not just find a good deal on a 1GHz AXIA or AYJHA and overclock it to 1350MHz or so? Could save you some money and would pretty much fill the potential for of your current motherboard. If you get a good one it might be able to hit 1500MHz+ and use that on your new set up.

So JustStarting, you're saying even if I got a 1.4 cpu it couldn't run stable at 1.4 Ghz? Makes sense. I'll have to check my fsb, I haven't messed it up. . . er, I mean, messed with it, in a while.

Rogue1979 I like your idea. 1350 or so should tide me over for a while.

. . . and about that "waitin' for the Sledgehammer" crap. Just wishful thinking.🙂

I'm leaning more and more towards the KR7A board.

Thanks to all who replied.

Yes, I'm saying that 1400 won't run at 1400 on that board. It would be a nice chip to have around for that KR7A when you get it. Ideally I'd get the KR7A and an XP1700/1800+. I think the XP1700 is the best value right now- maybe in a few weeks the 1800 will be.
