Question on XGA vs SXGA+ and external monitors

I'm going to purchase a Dell Latitude D610 for work, and I'm a little confused on what I should choose between the XGA and SXGA+ screens. From what I can tell the XGA has a standard res of 1024x768. This is the resolution I'd want to run at when not connected to an external display, because I just don't like a really high resolution on notebook screens. While at work though, I'll be connected to dual 1905FP's, so obviously I don't want to run 1024x768 in that case.

My question is that while connected to external monitors, can XGA laptops display greater than 1024x768, or is that the max resolution no matter if you are viewing the laptop display or external displays? Does the max resolution depend on the video card, or the monitor?
