Will an A/C unit that is meant to be placed in a window still function if simply left out in a sealed room? Any problems?

Ok, I failed to take into account simple common sense

Yeah, waste heat. Feel the back of one of those things while it's on, very very hot air.

but you'd have all the warm air coming out of the ac unit, not to mention the water.

I'm very interested to find this out as well.

Is there any problems with the exhaust, chemicals?

get yourself a dehumidifier, that'll make it a bit more liveable.

The reason I am asking is because the dorm I will be at next year has no A/C, and the windows open in a way which prohibits us from mounting it there. Anybody have any alternative cooling methods that would work?

Well a AC puts out the same amount of heat out the back as cold air out the fromt that should tell you something.
They do make some that dont have to be vented I have seen them at Wallmart but dont know how good they work. I think it depends where you are, if in Arizona a little water cooler will do the trick, if in New Orleans your screwed. Unless of course you cut a hole in the door and vent it out into the hall, probably get in trouble for that though.

Going somewhere dry? The evaporatice coolers work well in dry climates but if you're going somewhere humid, well, learn to live with it?

Those standalone floor units are $$$.

You may be able to rig something with a window unit, some exhaust fans, a wooden box and some ducting.

What kind of ceiling is in the dorms, If it has that push up tile you may be able to work with that.

I was thinking about some elaborate ducting/ venting, but the way the windows are set up, I would have to cover the whole frame with some sort of plastic, with a hold for the duct, and that's against regulations.

from storage to use: my father says to do this, that is, he tells me to do this:

have the ac sit right side up for a few hours if you havent been storing them like that. then run it on "fan" then turn it on a low "cool" for a few hours.

be prepared to get a lot of dust and stuff. clean your filter(s).

--

if you operate it in the room, you're an idiot. you'll wind up heating up the place due to the lack of 100% efficiency. you'll have to make due with a much more expensive portable ac unit.

Duct the hot air out. We don't sell the portable air conditioners at the walmart I work at.
