Question on the Beowulf poll....please read and respond...

Hey all...

To make sure that the best name is chosen, would we want to take the top 3 or 4 names (based on votes) from the original poll and start a new poll to give everyone a chance to choose the final name......

i.e. ...sorta make the first poll a PRIMARY to choose the "choices" for the final poll?

Or...

Highest vote count wins...?

The problem with the "higest" count wins is that others (teams, etc) could choose a name that wasn't in the best interest or what we really wanted and could take the vote....if the choices are narrowed down to about 3 or 4, then everyone on our TeAm would choose one of those and others couldn't influence it so much?

Give me your thoughts!

I like the idea of 2 polls, but lets not overrun the forum with 'Beowulf' this and 'Beowulf' that! ;)

Being a registered Independent, I appreciate the chance to actually vote in a Primary and have it count!! ;)
OK state has a closed primary system for most things.....

The idea of having 2 polls is a real good one.

This is becoming as bad as some of the committee & management meetings I used to have to attend. We're calling a meeting today to finalize the agenda that we rough drafted at yesterday's meeting for tomorrow's meeting on How to Reduce Meetings. :|

I say use the first poll. Whichever name wins, is it. Period. Vote wisely, Vote Foolishly, just Vote. If you name doesn't win, too bad, suck it up. :p

I personally don't care what you call it, as long as it is crunching for Team Anandtech. :D

I was thinking that when I looked at the poll. The winning margin would be very small otherwise.

BTW: Smack Ray with his cane and sit him in a corner until this is over! ;)

But it would be the "winning" margin. Key word "winning", as in the name that WON the vote! :p

Which I say go with, unless there is an exact tie. Then we could have a vote off. Or a coin toss. :)

And I'll ignore the rest of that comment....:p

If the poll were open only to the regular contributing DC members(of any and all AT teams) I could agree with RaySun2Be. :)

However, since it's open to everyone who's ever signed up on the Forums, I say go with 2 polls. ;)

Besides, if think about it, it isn't much different then how the US holds its primary for each party and the general election: Votes are cast for each party to pick one candidate to represent that party in the general election. Then we vote a 2nd time in the general election for 1 person.

Just be glad Ray that we're not considering implementing an Electoral College too! :Q :D

It's just a name, for crying out loud, not electing a person to theoretically "represent" us poor slobs in the administrative branch of government.

And since the second poll would still be open to anyone who has joined the forums, the "votes" you are so concerned about can still be skewed, with a potential mix of teammates and just people who joined the forums? (Besides, do you really think that there are a lot of non-teammate lurkers who really care about screwing with the voting on the name of a collection of hardware?)

So a second "vote off" may not result in any difference than the first one as far as teammates or just forum members. In fact, what would prevent someone from going to ATOT or BBR and posting a "Help the TA DC folks Name their equipment" topic? Talk about skewed results. :Q

I still say the name that wins the first poll should get the title, and let's move on to other things. And I am unanimous in that, (if not alone). ;)

Yep! And it's those same folks that rate people with a "1" just for the heck of it too. ;)

So, unless we move the second vote off-site to a different, secured forum, can't those same lurkers skew the voting on the name again? Or should we have a third vote-off to really, really, really make sure that this is the name the voters are voting for?

I don't want this project to turn into a "fight" just like the BBR Crunchenstein started out....simply wanted an opinion on whether the name would be better chosen on a Primary and Final poll.

The name matters little, other than it should reflect some sort of TRUE PROJECT name (IMO)...

I'll let the poll go on for a little while....maybe a couple of weeks as I'm going on vacation :D next week....to give everyone a chance to vote on a name.

I have no other preference on the name though.....

I'm just expressing a difference of opinion, that's all. :p

And they still haven't produced a logical argument for having a second vote session. :p

Ray asked for a "good" reason for having the second poll so I'll take a stab at it....

In the first poll people have 400 trillion:Q choices but can only choose 1. There is no 2nd or 3rd choice. There are many great name ideas so narrowing them down to the top 3 or 4 choices and then "revoting" makes logical sense to get a "majority". Now I agree that it "is only a name" but if a name wins by only 1 or 2 votes it hardly has a mojority. I'm also not saying we need a majority vote to "win" but.... aw heck this is too much work:p and the "political season" is still to far away for me to be thinking this hard;)

I say call it ________ so everyone can make up their own name when they see it in the stats:p
