Question on repair options

EDIT: Thread answered.

A friend's laptop turned non-responsive, they asked me to look at it. Read through things, did the full power down, memory 1 stick at a time. Lights are on both power supply and laptop, even had a dying period where you could raise or lower the screen to make it turn on, figure power button/harness. I'm OK with concepts like shorting the power button on my PC, but I'm not experienced at all in laptop repair.

Which is a long introduction to my problem. It's a decent enough system, 1.5 years old and worth repair. I figure geeks squad isn't the right solution, mom and pop repair shops seem to be drying up with all the retail repair. What's option would you recommend to get this repaired?
