Hey,

I currently have an Aopen 250W power supply on my 550mhz p3.

I am upgrading to a Soltek 85ERV and P4 2.4 GHZ processor. This will run the hardrive (15gb), Video card (g4 ti 4200), lan, and 1 CD rom drive which I won't use... only to reinstall windows then I wil disconnect it.

Will my power supply or mobo/cpu cough up and die?. Also are the fittings ok if it fits on a p3 board?

Thanks.

i highly doubt that a 250 watt psu will power your upgrade. actually i'm going to go ahead and promise you it won't power your upgrade. it also probably does not have a 4pin aux power connector that the new p4 MB's require.

If it has the 4 pin 12V+ connector that is required for Intel Pentium 4 based motherboards, then yes a 300W power supply will generally work with the setup you have given us. I have never heard of startech nor do I know anything about the quality of the power supply though. It might turn out to be crap though...

i just tried it and it looks like the power supply (250 W old one) fits in my pentium 4 motherboard.

Idon't have the pentium 4 chip... but would it be really bad if I tried using the 250W supply with the pentium 4? would it blow up or something or permanently damage my hardware? I would only be using it for a few days to afford another one.

I had a 130w psu running:

Athlon 1600+
ECS K7S5A
2x HDD
CD ROM
CD R/RW
Screen
512mb Ram
Sound Card
TNT2 VGA Card

It has to be said though this was very flukey....i had to upgrade it when i got a Radeon 9700 pro which has to be 250w, saying that the 250w PSU i upgraded to is running all that except a new Radeon and an Asus A7N8X Deluxe...maybe a fluke again ;)

Pentium 4 motherboards have a special 4 pin connector that must be plugged in to the power supply in addition to the normal ATX power connector that all motherboards have. If your power supply has that 4 pin connector you could go ahead and try using the 250W power supply until you have a chance to upgrade to a larger and more powerful one.

Using a less adequate power supply could damage your hardware. If the draw on the power supply from everything in your computer exceeds the power supplies limit it will more than likely shut itself off and then could possibly turn back on. That cycling of power could damage your hardware.

I tried to find some info on the startech branded power supplies, but I couldn't find a single specification listing the ripple values for their various units. I can't comment on something I can't get total info about. The prices I saw were quite high too, you can pick up an Enermax or Antec for about 1/2 as much and get more power and a reliable brand name to go with.

I believe the 250W is enough to power your system. I'm running P4 2.4, Radeon 9700, CDRW, DVD-ROM, 2 7200RPM HDs, Audigy 2, DVD Hardware Decoder card (Hollywood Plus), 6 system fans (excluding the Radeon fan), and 1 CPU fan on a 300W system.

An ATX power supply (which you should have since you are running a P3) can be coverted to an ATX12V via a cable adapter. One can be found at: http://www.pcpowerandcooling.com/products/alarmandaccesories/accessories/popups/index_12vatx.htm
There are also several sites selling similar cables for a couple of bucks cheaper.
