i have a couple of question relating to networking. i live in an apartment. i have a cousin that lives in the upstairs apartment and i'm using her cable connection right now. she have one computer and a wireless router upstairs. i have 2 computer down in my apartment. one in my room and one in the living room. i want to know is it possible to connect my two computers together so i can access one with another (transfering mp3s, videos, and such) without having my cousin upstairs to have access to it. both of my computer have a wireless adapter inside. any help would be appreciated. thanks

edit: i don't know how to connect my two computer together to access data with one another so i need help on that also.
edit2: i'm a really big newbie at networking.

In order to share files two computers has to be connected and file sharing set On.

Since you share Internet as well you might want to read this first.

Link to: AnandTech - FAQ. Basic Options for Internet Connection Sharing

Link to: AnandTech - FAQ. Hubs, routers, switches, DSL, LANs, WANs...?

Link to: AnandTech - FAQ. What do I need for wireless Networking?

The pages above were written by me a while ago. Ignore the prices and the Hardware recommendations, stick to the principles.

Link to: Diagram of Broadband Connection with Cable/DSL Router.

Log to this page it has a lot of links to instructions to Windows Network Settings, and Sharing.

Link to: Windows Network - Installing & Sharing.

:sun:

P.S. If you decide to get a Router you can connect it to your Internet source as described in my previous post.

after reading so much stuff i'm feeling dizzy. this might be dumb. so i can't just transfer files between my two computer downstairs without setting up a network? the computer upstairs is using windows 98, my two computer downstair is using windows xp pro. there's no connection between any of the computers right now since the two computer downstairs is only using the router upstairs to connect to the internet. only thing i want to do is for example using the computer in my living room to take mp3s from the computer in my room. isn't there a simple solution to this? sorry for all these question. i am a newbie though

When you are connected to the router to access the internet, both of your computer are connected to the LAN (local arena network) of the router. Basically all computer connected to the router, either via cables or wireless are interconnected in a network. You can try going to command prompt on one of your computer and do an ipconfig /all to check your ip address, and do the same on the other computer. Then you can try pinging each other and see if they reply. Dont forget to disable firewall features on windows before you can ping each other.

Good luck...
