Question on getting a T1...

Not sure if this is the right forum for this (although i'm sure someone will yell at me if its not) but my work is looking to get a new T1 provider (we currently lease a fractional t1 from a not too reliable provider.)

does anyone know of a website where i get different prices or compare providers without having to make like 20 calls?

I'm in the chicago area if that helps.

They usually have the best deals and can include a Cisco 2600 series, and a CSU/DSU too

Where is the T1 going? To another office or possibly the Internet?

I'd use a provider your comfortable with. I pay about $600/mo for a Internet T1.

Oh, sorry. Didn't realize you wanted a website to compare. Like everything price is negotiable, especially in telecom, so there is no stead fast rule for cost.

the t1 would be going to the internet. We are a small company, so we are the only office. the problem right now is that our current provider has not power backups, so if their power goes out (which happens a bit in our area) their power goes out too. Which means our internet is down, and even though we have computers on batterybackups enough to last at least an hour or more, without the internet connection, its kinda pointless

does anyone know of any good providers offhand?

This probably isn't what you want to hear, but what everyone is saying about the pricing being widely varied is true. T1's are such a low volume business that just about every circuit has a different negotiated price. You might try going to a broadband site like DSLreports.com and seeing if there are any highly rated providers there. Check if any of them also offer T1's and see about their offerings. That would be your best bet.

Also remember that cost of a circuit is highly dependent on area of the country and distance from the CO. I've paid anywhere from $800 - $1500. It's hard to give an "instant" price - You will likely have to call around and ask.

The size of your company and the amount of business you do with a provider also makes a difference - Spidey works for a big shop, and gets great rates. You might or might not get that kind of pricing.

If you are just using the T1 for internet access (including basic web & e-mail servers at your site), you might want to even consider SDSL. You can get speeds that rival a standard T1 if you are close enough to a properly wired CO, and generaly at a LOT LESS cost!

I remember Sprint offering a free Cisco 2600-series router if you signed-up with them...

your best bet is to get prices... and then try to negotiate amongst a few companies that have decent prices... and see who can cut you the best deal.
