Question on Forwarding Ports

To be short, I need to open a new port, but my router is not listed on the PortForward page. After reading through the site, it appears I need to submit a new one which requires I download a Beta program that "grabs" data from my browser and sends to them. This I do not trust as it seems too exploitable for me to be comfortable running.

Anyways, I have a Quest PK5000 router if that makes any difference. Can someone tell me if I have to submit a new router to open a port, or is there some way around this?

Thanks for the link Jack, but it appears I am doing something wrong with the LAN IP and Remote IP addresses. The port is still not open even though it shows it as open on the advanced setup.

Which port are you trying to open? Many ISPs block some incoming ports on their own routers so they will remain blocked no matter what you do on your individual connection.

As noted, many ISPs block certain inbound ports.

Also, how are you testing the port forwarding? You can't test it from inside your own network. Test traffic has to be sent from outside your network or port forwarding will appear to be failing.

I am testing it through uTorrent as that is how I have always tested my ports. Currently, I am trying to open port 4177 and uTorrent is marking it as not forwarded properly. The only thing I can think of would be that I am getting the LAN and Remote IP addresses incorrect.

Does your PC's firewall have openings for the needed ports? Have you got the forwarding set for the needed protocol (TCP, UDP, or both)?

You can identify your local IP using IPCONFIG. You can identify your router's IP by using http://whatsmyip.org. I'm not sure how you'd set a Remote IP for Torrent software, since I imagine requests could come from anywhere. But I know zilch about Torrents.

The remote should always be set at 0.0.0.0 for torrents from my understanding. The Local I found using the command prompt but it wouldn't accept it as a valid address. I shall keep trying; maybe I'll use my router's ip instead (thanks for the link).
