Question on Dual Xeon HT System on Win2k3 Server Web Edition

err

I have just installed Windows Server 2003 Web edition on Dual Xeon 2.8ghz System.

The bios seems to detect both processors just fine.

However when I go into the OS, it only sees 1 processor instead of 2. How do I know?

1. Opened task manager and only 2 CPU processes showed instead of 4 (supposed to be 4 due to the Hyper Threading)
2. Downloaded intel Cpu identifier and only saw 1 processor.
3. Downloaded Sisoft Sandra and also only saw 1 Proc.

I know Win2k3 Web only supports dual processor. However if the processor is HT, would it not recognize the other proc?

If anyone can give an insight on this or provide a link with appropriate documentation, it would certainly be appreciated.

TIA.

I have an Opteron 265 here, and it gives me that problem when the power eight way 12V cable is not well atached, may be your 12V power cable can be not well atached or your power supply with problems.
It can be caused too if your architeture of RAM needs to populate the sticks in a manner that fit at least one stick per processor .

I wonder if the OS is detecting the 2nd logical processor on the first processor due to HT and thus locking out the 2nd core\processor?

Perhaps dumb question, but is HT enabled in the bios? Im guessing that your seeing the two physical procs and are actually missing the two virtual ones.

ok guys.

I have a very very dumb answer for all of this strangeness 🙂

Apparently 2nd processor is not installed !! DOH !! The heatsink is installed, however there is no processor underneath the heatsink/fan.

So I am guessing either someone at work here stole a processor, or we were stiffed when we purchase this box.

Anyway, Thanks all and I hope you had a good laugh on this 🙂

Ed, that did give me a good laugh (not at you, but at the look I imagine your face having when you did the physical inspection and noticed). I hope you get it sorted out.

Best,
Bill

Well, glad you figured out the problem!

Huauauuhauhuahau, Normally, only Dell sell a machine telling 2 processors but when you buy the box you discover that you have to pay more for a second . Here in Brazil they act the exact same way, so people buy Servers and cry after. That why sometimes I love the Soho market. People do not have space to lie in your front if you understand the basics.
But the Real joke is when Intel was selling Xeons with the names " passive " and "active", everyone laugh after thinking this is very gay for a processor.
Malicious ...
