Question on drive setup

I have a question on the setup of my drives Here's what I have

1. Maxtor ATA 100 10 gb 7200 Rpm
2. Maxtor ATA 66 15 gb 7200 RPM
3. HP 8x CDRW
4. Toshiba 8x DVD

The way I have them setup now is

1.primary master
2.primary slave
3.secondary master
4.secondary slave

Is this the optimal setup? Any suggestions?

You want the fastest hardrive as the 'Master' on the Primary bus and the 2nd harddrive as the 'Master' on the Secondary bus. Place your CD-ROM's as Slaves.

If you're running an ATA 100 controller, be aware that the ATA66 drive will cause your ATA100 drive to run at the ATA66 speed. Replace it with another ATA100 would be my only other advise...

I am pretty sure that some/most CDRW makers advise you to make your CDRW a master drive.
There are different view points on how to set this up but I am going with my burner as the secondary master, exactly how you have it. This is what the manufacturer suggests so it can't be all bad
😉
Also, if you noticed when you installed your cdrw, the jumpers were "probably" already set to make it a master drive. Coincidence?

<edit>Johnny, I have heard that having a slower drive as the slave does not slow down your master? I might be wrong, but this is what I have read on this board numerous times. I think as long as you keep the slower drive as the slave and not the master, it should not effect the master. If this is not the case, then how can you hook up a cdrom drive as a slave and not have it bog down your hard drive? If I am mistaken, I am truly sorry, but could you direct me to more information so that I could feel comfortable with my knowledge level?</edit>

It all depends on how you use the drives. Of course the problem inherent with the IDE interface is one device one transaction at a time. That is, one device "hogs" the bus, even while performing a lengthy command. If you do a lot of CD-to-CD copies, you'll want the burner and the DVD-ROM on separate IDE channels. Otherwise, I'd leave the burner as Master on the Secondary IDE controller.

I also agree with Pabster's reference to having both cd drives on the same channel. My burning software warned me against this sort of use. (I of course promptly disabled that warning and went on my way)
