Question on DDR prices

There's been some talk that with the introduction of AM2, mem manufacturers will reduce DDR volumes, resulting in a higher prices?

How likely is this to happen? I mean, is it community buzz that some agree with and some don't, or a general consensus based on the history of memory type transitions?

Reason I ask is that I've been planning to get some new DDR RAM for a secondary system, but I don't need the sticks at all right now so I was thinking of waiting for the prices to drop... but if they're likely to go up, I might as well buy now.

Thanks for any advice.

I doubt DDR ram prices will still get lower as it is now. With a price of less than $100/GB, it's already low as it is. With the intro of AM2 which uses DDR2 demand for DDR will drastically decrease. So to maintain price at its current level manufacturers will have to reduce supply. If you plan on using DDR for your next system highly recommend you buy your pieces now. There's a lot of bargain going on in the FS/FT section.

DDR will probably increase in cost over time, with AM2 there won't be any current generation systems using DDR and as such the factories that make DDR will shut down or retool for DDR2 where there is a growing demand.

DDR will rise in price as there will be less demand. With AMD's future release of AM2, and with Intel already on board with DDR2, memory manufacturers will place lower priority on DDR and ramp up DDR2 production.

Remember the transition from EDO to SDRAM... and then the transition to DDR?
Go price some new PC100 or PC133 and you'll be shocked at the prices...
Eventually, the same thing will happen to DDR, after a certain length of time of course.. but not overnight

I actually just had to do that. My sister whom is completely computer illiterate refuses to buy a new system but decided her old system (HP) needed more memory. I bought 2 512mb sticks of PC133 SDRAM CL2 from Crucial for $33.69 each............

Did you just do this recently? I only ask because it is showing up at $94.99 per stick right now as I type this..

Look at the price of SDRAM. It's actually gone up because there is currently only 1 manufacturer of it in the world. SDRAM is now more expensive than DDR by a big margin. DDR is probably as cheap at it is ever going to be.

You got a super deal. SDRAM has been much more expensive than that for a long time.
