question on credit history...

if you get a joint account with someone, do you still build up a credit history for yourself? hmm... i was wondering because i always have had an a joint account, and the other day i was trying to apply for a gap card but i got reject.... my credit history is perfect and so is the other joint owner of the visa card... so maybe because i don't have a credit history due to the fact that i only have a joint account?
