Nephew is in 2nd grade. Typical bilingual family. Parents does not speak english
Went to his PTA meeting last night.

Teacher says he has hard time focusing, ie easily distracted ?

Not able to memorize stuff.. in one ear and out the other..

So they have like an annual pass/fail exam. If he fails, he'll be repeating 2nd grade.

I only see him once a while and all he ask me for are ds games. His parents said he only plays on weekend, but everytime i see him he's on ds or pc.

Every time i see his parents, they got the cartoon channel turned on and they let the kids go wild..

So for xmas, im not going to buy him any more ds games till he pulls the grade up..
If he has hard time memorizing stuff, are there those flash card games that helps him memorize better ? how do you get your memorizing skills up ?

just curious.. not married and dont have kids... no idea how to raise one

flash cards and stuff are ok. the neighbor kid is exactly like this- just needs a little discipline from the parents to make study time happen.

People who continuously plop their kids in front of the TV deserve everything their ADD afflicted spawn can throw at them. And yes I have a kid.

i doubt they'll dicipline their kids..

i was thinking of those learning centers like sylvan, http://sylvan.learning-centers.com/

not sure how helpful they'll be... wouldn't it be good to get into a good habit of studying early in childhood or it doesn't matter ?

so the older nephew is having problem, the younger one already wears coke bottle glasses...

Sylvan learning just wants to take your money. The best thing you can have is good parents, no real other way to do it.

You can try to get him a fun educational video game, but beyond that there is little you can do since you are not the parent.

seems like his parents aren't emphasizing his education, so why would the kid even care. parents need to set a better example. im sure they have a harder time getting involved due the language barrier, but they should really make an effort. hell, if the parents showed interest in learning a new language, that might even encourage the kid to focus on his own education. as for what you can do, i think rewarding good grades with games is a great incentive. the kid doesnt really understand why he needs to try at school yet, but whatever you can do to start teaching good habits will help in the long run.

without support at home everything is a wash.

The kid learns most by watching his parents DO rather than what they TELL.

So how long until they break out the amphetamines as opposed to 'disciplining' (not beating or any form of punishment) the kid...
