Go with like an Athlon 64 3000+ or 3200+ which are slightly cheaper than comparable P4s, and have slightly better performance in mostly everything.

i would go for a p4 system, like the one u had in mind. P4's are better for encoding so dont get an a64, they are generally for gaming.

I would go with the A64 because nowadays the are rivaling intel in encoding decoding performance on the latest M/B's. However it must be intel dont get the abit. Verry buggy, i would get the Asus P4P-800xx (SE, Deluxe, -e deluxe), or the P4C800-E Deluxe. Both are better than the Abit.

Can't really go wrong with the setup you have laid out for what you plan on doing.. But personally, I would go with an A64 because they offer a better price/performance ratio

for what you do i's reccomend a 2.8 northwood if you can still get it and some good pc 3700 ram and overclock it to like 3.4 GHz. coupling a p4 with high fsb and fast 1:1 memory will do better in all that encoding.

when people say that now the amd 64's are even beating intel's in encoding, they are talking about the socket 939 3500+ or better chips. for a system in the price range of the one you gave, the p4 would beat an amd 64 3000 or 3200 on socket 754 when both are overclocked
