question on adding another ATA100 drive

the boot sequence settings in BIOS don't seem to deal with ATA100 drives at all except to decide whether to hit ATA or SCSI first. If I add a second ATA100 drive, how does the machine know which one is the boot disk?? I added one earlier as a master on the secondary ATA port and the first hard drive was immediately trashed (no O/S, no format).
Fortunately, I didn't have much loaded yet. The mobo is A7V133, drives are Deskstar.
 
The first primary partition on your system defaults to the C drive. 99.9% of the time that will be located on the master hard drive on the primary IDE channel.
