Question: How to run dual monitor in Red Hat 9 ?

Anyone got this setup right ? I've just installed RH9 on my computer and would like to run dual monitor with this OS.

More Info if needed:

Video Card 1: Geforce 4 MX (AGP)
Video Card 2: Riva TNT 16MB (PCI)

Monitor 1 : Viewsonic PF790
Monitor 2 : Mitsubishi 900u

Right now the main monitor RH uses is the Viewsonic PF790 on Riva TNT card.

If anyone would point me to a website with documentation on this, that would also be great.

If you are running the latest Nvidia driver check /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA*/README. Look at appendix I for the Twinview stuff

Redhat's regular gui configuration tools should be able to handle that.

If that doesn't work. Turn off X and get to the virtual terminal. Try "XFree86 --configure" command. If you can get it working thru that, then copy the new config file to /etc/X11/XF86Config (or whatever place the original file is, be sure to make a backup of your original file so that if you make a mistake you can just copy back the original)


If that doesn't work then you may need to just edit the XF86Config file by hand. It's detailed in the nvidia driver README file from Nvidia's website. Plus serveral Howtos exist on the internet, so google for it.

I run dual monitors, so latter this evening I will post my config file here to give you something to work off of, If you don't get it by then.

Getting a custom X setup can be troubleing for a windows user. Manually editing config files is very unusual in windows, so this can seem very difficult at first, but it is actually really easy once you get the hang of it.

Google for "Xinerama howto", that will step you through the whole process, although there may be an easier way by now.

if you can, get a dual vid (nvidia) video card. nicer to setup.
