Question for you Cable Internet Users

My cable modem is connected to a Wireless router, and from that I have a Laptop connected wirelessly, and a computer hooked up to Port 1 through 7ft of Cat-5 cord. The internet works fine, but for some reason... I have to reset my cable modem about once every 36 hours or so. If I don't my desktop says no connection, and my laptop won't recognise it? Is it a crappy ISP? Because I have buddy that has to do the same thing that lives across town. Or is it just a draw back of cable?

My system is all hardwired. I don't even like the idea of Wireless. My cable modem never seems to lose the connection unless I physically unplug the power to it (no off-on switch).

Maybe there is a setting in the router to tell it not to renew it's DHCP lease. Or perhaps you router needs to do it more often, what is the default DHCP lease time with windows?

Awesome, I've never checked the router settings. I bought it used from someone here on the forums, so it may very well be router settings

Get any firmware upgrades that are available for your router.

99% sure this is your routers IP lease not being renewed by the router , you can manually set this in the routers setup. But any firmware upgrade that may be available will most likely update this setting? What do you have a Linksys WRT54g?

With Comcast cable, that is almost routine. About once a week I simply unplug the power from the router and force it to re-seek the IP that has changed. It's really sort of routine.

I put the router and the cable modem on one surge protector which I keep accessible. If I have any problem I turn 'em both off briefly, then back on. It's annoying, but...

I had that. Every day or two I would lose connection. SOmetimes it got down to every hour or two of heavy use, (online game play). Called the cable company, they replaced the modem. No problems since.

Yeah, I'd say check with the cable company to see if they have a newer cable modem. It's usually a painless and free process to get a new one from them.

Have you tried power cycling the router instead of the cable modem to see if that brings it back? If so, then it's not the cable modem causing the problem.

I can access my router via it's IP and tell it do to a release/renew any time it gets stuck but it isn't very often.
