im a sigma nu and we were founded on the principle of no hazing.

My fraternity chapter of Sigma Nu did no hazing whatsoever... but other fraternities on campus did. A fraternity's personality all depends on the guys who are in it. Every one has its own personality.

Exactly, even within the same fraternity each chapter is very different.

I find it comical that so many people trash fraternities without really knowing any. Theres ups and downs, and if its "good" or "bad" depends wholly on the person and the specific fraternity.

That being said, I didn't get hazed necessarily.

Some fraternities do, some (like mine) do not. I joined my fraternity 18 years ago and I'm quite active as an alumni. It is one of the best decisions I ever made.

Hazing REALLY pisses me off.

Unfortunately there some fraternity?s where hazing is present, but not all of them. I know for a fact that Sigma Pi, which I am a member of, does not take the issue lightly. Hazing is strictly prohibited which I agree with. A fraternity is not seeing how big of a man you are, but meeting friends for life.

I don't know about you, but I for one, don't need to PAY for my friends.

Don't bother with your flame suit, we can't help it you're ignorant.

Yea, I pay dues. Know what? I get free food fairly often, I get trips to sporting events, we had a beach house for 10 days over the summer that I went to for free, etc. If you're an active member, you get all that money back.

Douchebag. I repeat, don't talk about what you don't know.

To answer the very simple question "Is pledging synonomous with hazing?":
No - everyone pledges, not everyone is hazed.

Hm I see. Thanks guys for all the replies. It was very informative to the practices of other fraternities around the nation.

Sure might seem that way when you spend all of your time posting on AT and 95% of your friends are names on a screen.

--Wait, does that seem like an(other) unfair blanket statement?

Some schools are very strict about what is considered hazing... our chapter had a pledge project (making a haunted house for the kids on Halloween), and that came close to hazing in the school's eyes.

What I always wondered is why anyone would join a house that hazed. I someone ever told me I couldn't shower and had to clean the house all week, I'd just leave. Silly what some people will allow others to do to themselves.

If I was in a frat, I'd be all over hazing the new kids, in the Old School kind of way.

it's funny you say that cuz I'm still pledging, and I put in that movie for shts and giggles

I was going through...and then @the kid's bday party, when will farrel(sp?) is telling that kid to get him a beer, me and my friend were like OMG SO TRUE!

and once again at the end when he blows up at that guy to get him a beer haha

Well, the harder stuff is supposed to bring the pledge class closer together, which is does. The humiliating stuff would be to gain self confidence, or that's what I'd assume anyway.

That may be so, but I've seen our pledge class come together from the Haunted House projects just the same. Plus, they are allowed to get input/help from any of the older brothers if they ask. Of course, hazing in the media sense is far different from what is really done in fraternities (or at least from what I've seen).

hahah, yes, that's what the hazing fraternities like to make you think. Tip for ya: I did a lot of work with my pledge class, all voluntary, and we came together and have plenty of self confidence.

Hazing is useless.

I was in a frat while in college. We got kicked off campus though. Eh well, who cares. I was glad it was ending anyway. Got to be a real PITA!

That's not essentially true. In 'certain programs', you have to go through ALOT for your pbro's. In those 'certain programs' you look at your pbro and it's like "goddamn, I can't believe you did that sht" and stuff like that. Those 'programs' stress sacrifice ALOT. I don't see how you can sacrifice making a haunted house. They 'push you to your limits' that way you know where they are and can grow.

At least, that's 'they' want 'you' to believe. Blind faith goes a long way.

Not necessarily, belonging to a fraternity is a great networking tool later in life.

That is true... I can go anywhere in the country and have a place to stay, and people waiting to be friend me.
Fraternitys are GREAT networking tools, more then you think.

I can do about the same, without the gay sex.

Lemme guess... someone asked you if a rag smelled like chloroform, and the next thing you knew, you were naked on the floor, with a condom hanging out of your butt??

😀
