How good (quiet) is the stock HSF?

I am wondering if I should go with the stock HSF or buy the Thermaltake CL-P0114 (Typhoon).

Any help would be appreciated.

Edit: I do NOT plan on OCing. I just want quiet and cool enough temperatures such that my CPU doesn't fry and can last a while.

The Stock HSF that comes with the X2's (ie the Heatpipe AVC model) other than some 3800's is noisy. I have one, I stopped using it. It is fine for cooling, but it is not quiet.

The Thermaltake Big Typhoon is quiet, and it has been rated favourably. Of course, if you have piles of cash to spend, there are so many options....

I am trying to keep the cost of a HSF between $40-50 at the most!

Yes, but if he has up to $50 to spend, TTBT - quiet & even cooler :)

Oh, & GTaudiophile, the stock HSFs are usually very whiney due to the high rpms they run at.
The HSF that came with my Venice & my X2 were identical, from what i can tell.

Newegg only carries the XP-90C for $63. Where can I buy the non-copper version?

When i was using my stock x2 4400+ hsf i had it running between 1000-2000rpm max via speedfan and temps never went past 48 C. With it oced to 2450mhz, temps went up to 51-52C. At 1000rpm, it is almost silent, and at 2000rpm it still remains fairly quiet, but at right (2-3am) when everything was dead quiet i could here a slight whine coming from it. Anything above 2000rpm is plain annoying, it starts getting real load. If you can keep temps good with it running below 1600rpm all the time you can avoid the whine. Its pretty good for a stock HSF, but it is obviously not made to be quiet :)

btw: Idle was around 34C with CNQ enabled

I tried a 80mm to 120mm fan mod too, it didnt work because the fan setup on it seems to be rectangular, not square...That was probably done deliberatly on the OEM's part.

I have decided to go with the Thermaltake Typhoon. I think that'll do just fine. I just hope it's not too much of a pain to install.

Get the scythe ninja. It's VERY easy to install (much better than tension clips, the sycthe ones snap on) and can cool with as little airflow as a 50cfm 120mm fan. :)

Link to said product? I can't find it on newegg.

Dumb question, can the fan on the stock hsf be replaced? That might be an option for short change.

If you dont OC, the stock HSF is fine.

My temps (4400+ at stock settings) never go above 45°C with 2 instances of prime95 running and the fan also stays well below 2000rpm which is silent. The friggin NB fan is louder on my DFI Lanparty. :(

You have the X2 4400+ with the "heatpipe" stock HSF?

The stock heatsink/fan assembly is fine at stock speeds. Don't blow a wad of extra cash if you don't have to.

It works fine for me even overclocking. I have an Antec Sonata II, so that probably dulls down the noise some, but it seems to cool quite well, and doesn't seem loud to me. I get 51c max load temps with 2 instances of prime95 at 2.618ghz 1.475v, and the fan never kicks in to high.

My 3800+ came with a non-heatpipe alu-only version which is loud and doesn't cool well.

Mind you it is a gazillion times quieter than the one AMD gave me with my Athlon XP in 2003.

I'd recommend that anyone who builds their own PC or gets into modifying it ALWAYS plan on overclocking in the future. A few years back when I built my system I thought "Oh, nooooo, I'll NEVER overclock my system...." So I got DDR333 ram for my Barton with a 333FSB. Shame on me, I've hit myself over the head several times for not buying the DDR400. Would have saved a decent amount of money. Sure you might not want to overclock now, but in 2 years when you know more about computers I guarentee you'll feel differently.

Point being: Don't ever allow for any bottlenecks in your system now or in in the future; when its such a small upgrade (like in my case DDR333 to 400 or in your case anok 35$ cooler to a great 50$ one) go ahead and get the better one, better spend 50$ now and have the option of using it than spend 35 now and then 50$ later. I bet 1/3 times you do this you'll thank yourself you did, therefore justifying the cost.

i went and got the xp-120 and a 120mm delta fan for mine (190cfm). left divx encoding overnight (using both cores) and temps show 31c

should have plenty of headroom for overclocking :)

Hmm. If it's quiet, I don't mind saving the money...

It's worth a try. I was actually going to use a different HSF from the start, due to bad experience with stock HSF in the past. But I read several comments about the heatpiped stock HSF that comes with the 4400+ X2 that were pretty positive, so I figured I try first and might save money that way.

I'm not going to even attempt OC before I get my new Antec P180, but once it arrives in a week or two, I'll see how far the stock HSF takes me. If it's necessary to move to a "better" one, so be it. If not, the better. :)

My favorite HS/fan setup is the Arctic Cooler stuff.

I use this one. Its a heatpipe solution.. very quiet and cooler than stock HSF.

Will take up to 5000+ so its ready for any current A64. Looks pretty good thru my case window too!
