I'm thinking of taking up a few Unix classes. I'm interested in doing some Unix administration, I've been a Sys admin working with NT for about 2 years and I'm think I'm ready to tackle something bigger. Ideally I would like to get certified in some form of Unix and begin consulting.

So basically my questions are:

Which flavor of Unix is the most common and which would you recommend a new person start learning?

What have you seen some Unix admins earn?

I think that Solaris is the most common, but HPUX isnt far behind, Aix should be included too. I am an HPUX administrator. You want to start learning scripting also. Pearl, shell scripting, and basic would be a good start.

Is Unix difficult to learn? I've heard its somewhat easier if you're familiar with dos. I hope thats the case because I've been working with dos commands for a while now.

It just takes time. Its mostly command line stuff. Here, go take a look at the Unix forums and see what we do....HP Forums

It is pretty easy to learn up to the stage of knowing enough to be dangerous. That is when the real learning starts. You can get a Linux/FreeBSD machine up pretty quick and that is probably the best way to begin learning.
