When do you make your lunch? The night before or the morning of? If the night before, say you make a sandwich, do you leave it out or refrigerate?

I am a 20 year old intern and tend to just eat in the cafeteria and out every day. Its a sad outlook to see there are 40 year olds at work who eat frozen meals for lunch and such...does life ever get better or does it just suck more and more? I have a grim outlook on being a 40 year old.

I am use to eating out every day...but it gets really expensive here in DC not to mention the constant feeling of being unhealthy.

I went to Whole Foods today and bought some good hoagie bread, fresh salami, tomato, and mozzarella to make sandwiches for a week...combined with extra virgin olive oil, S&P, and oregano. To that I will add a banana or apple and a small bag of potato chips.

Seems healthier but price wise for the week is probably about the same sadly. It's expensive to eat healthier. Easy to eat unhealthy.

Not in my experience.

well you probably enjoy the responsibilities and expriences as a working adult, but at my age, i still tend to fear that a bit.

Your fearless willingness to spend more money than necessary on lunch every single work day certainly marks you as man to be reckoned with. :disgust:

Do you pay your own rent?

Actually, I remember thinking the same thing as you, particularly after my first day at work and realizing I was going to have 8:00 work every day for the rest of my life. And I had avoided 8:00 classes like the plague.

Today, I am rarely later than 7:15. I guess I like what I am doing. Life is good.

Sorry for the hijack, OP.

Eh, to continue the threadjack...

It wasn't so scary for me but I can see how it is for some college graduates. Many of the "poor" spoiled babies out there go to college and graduate without having worked a real "9-5" job. All of the sudden they can't sleep until noon, don't get a spring break, and of course no 3 months off in the summer! But I was a co-op student at Georgia Tech and started working for Delta Air Lines full-time starting my second year in college. I even had one semester where I took a full load of classes (15 hours) and worked half-time for Lufthansa German Airlines.

You will soon come to several realizations...

1) Real success is made outside of 9-5. If you're 25-40 years-old working 40 hours per week, you'll get nowhere in life. Success comes at 50, 60, 80, 100 hours of work per week.
2) BUT life is about balance, and this is something Americans have a hard time figuring out. You shouldn't live to work, you should work to live. This balance is for each person, based on his or her circumstances, to determine. For me, it means working as hard as I can when needed, meaning 40+ hours when necessary. But it also means being very thankful that my employer gives me 4-5 weeks of vacation per year, and I can for example go enjoy several days of spa treatment in Baden-Baden during my two-week-long Christmas break.
3) Between the ages of 25-35, you are truly in your prime. Work your butt off, invest, save...because your body won't allow you to be so productive in the future.

Too late. I already added the olive oil. I'll correct for Tuesday's lunch.

Well if you have a refrigerator, why wouldn't you use it. And it's supposed to be cheaper. I don't know if you're buying a bunch of organic and gourmet stuff at Whole Foods or what, but if you can't save money by brown-bagging, you're doing something wrong.

Yeah, sorta. Did you know that a little ball of mozerella cheese costs $8?

I have been putting mayo on the night before on my sandwiches for 14 years. What is the problem?

Some would argue about your "healthier" food choices.

I brown bag and make it the night before and refrigerate it. But my workday starts at 6:00 AM and I only get 30 minutes for lunch.

As difficult as it sounds, just get up 10 minutes earlier and make a fresh lunch. It is well worth it IMO.
