Question for those who own Blu-ray or HD DVD

Ok right before I bought my HD DVD I was buying up cheap DVDs left and right.

But it seems like the second I bought the HD DVD player I stoped even looking in the bargin bin at Wal-mart.

I am wondering if others are doing the same thing?

Or are you still buying regular DVDs and the High Def ones?
 
I don't buy DVDs now. I will only rent a DVD if there isn't an HD DVD available for rent or purchase. I've also rented Bluray Disc exclusive films from the XBOX Marketplace.
 
I have essentially stopped buying DVDs. I rent them from Netflix when no other format is available. Even with upconverting, DVD's can't compare for clarity of picture, color (often overlooked), and sound (I like the new sound formats, especially uncompressed PCM and TrueHD.)
 
Depends on the title. Lots of Indie films are only on DVD. I only buy new Hollywood releases on Blu-Ray or HD-DVD.
 
Stopped buying 'em years ago. Indeed, I sold off my collection while prices were still high though I had bought most of 'em for a few bucks each thanks to the internets bubble bobble. Can you believe folks were actually paying much higher than original retail for so-called "out of print" editions?
 
Purchases in the last 4 months:

bought about 5 blu-ray titles and 7 hd-dvd titles to date.
I bought 1 DVD - 'Ghostbusters' from Walmart bargain bin......I figure I'll watch it again.

Other than above, I rent DVD's from Netflix and blockbuster.
 
I'll buy dvds of movies I can't get in HD, bought House season 1 yesterday. Dang thing is non-anamorphic, I get the nice lovely black bars on all 4 sides. ugh. Figure I'd have to wait for Universal to go Blu, even then likely never make a re-release. Just like we saw season 3 of Lost, but I doubt 1 & 2 will ever make it, or season 6 of Sopranos but none of the others. Let's see if we actually get Star Trek season 2 released this year.

Before that, bought the best of the Colbert Report (though this was a gift), Bender's Big Score, and 1408.

Content is always more important than resolution.

User err. Anamorphic only comes into play with widescreen 2.39:1 where the full height of the 1.37:1 frame is utilized via a non-spherical lens which is then reversed for playback. TV is either 1.33:1 or 1.78:1. If not filling horizontally then either the TV and/or the player are misconfigured.
 
I only rent movies in Blu-Ray now (I rarely purchase any movies for I mostly just watch any given movie one time) when Blu-Ray is available.

Unfortunately, all of the Dr. Who episodes (that were not erased by the BBC back in the 60s / 70s and were released on DVD in modern times) are only available on SD-DVD now, so I just deal with upscaled DVDs.

I stopped buying DVD's when I got a Blu-Ray player about 9 months ago. At first, I bought up Blu-Ray disks. Then I slowed down and started being selective about what I buy (movies that really benefit from HD), and rent or check out movies at the library. I bought an HD-DVD player but only got movies that were exclusive to HD-DVD, so my collection of HD movies is still 90% Blu-Ray.

If prices significantly drop on Blu-Ray movies, I may start buying more freely. Right now, I'm trying to go slowly (though all the buy one get one free sales are enticing).
 
Havent bought a DVD in years. We rent through netflix. But I have bought about 10 HD-DVD's in the past 2 months. Netflix also has an option to send the HD-DVD version of the disc which is nice. We have had a few of them come through the pipe.

Netflix+PS3 FTW. The few I feel are worth owning, I buy in Blu-Ray, unless it were something like the Simpson movie where I couldn't give a shat about the quality difference.

 
I rent 99% of my movies and TV shows.

For any movies or US TV shows I like enough to want a copy, it's blu-ray or nothing now.

I've bought some anime OVA / TV collections recently on DVD but only at steep discounts and/or if they're going out of print (Geneon). Even if high-def masters are available the odds of them arriving on blu-ray are low and probably many years away. For Miyazaki I'm holding out for blu-ray.
 
I stopped buying DVD's since last spring when I knew I was getting one of the HD players. Since I got a Blu-ray player, I've been buying disk like crazy. I wanted to get Resident Evil: Extinction today, but my local BB didn't have it.

The content is 1.78:1, the dvd video is 1.33:1 with the black bars encoded into the video. Between the PS3 and my tv, there are no options to achieve optimal sizing and aspect ratio. I tried them all.
 
I rarely buy DVDs now. Part of that reason though is I bought a projector. DVDs look that much worse on a humungous screen.
 
I have both BD & HD-DVD but I still buy SD-DVD's all the time ... mainly animated stuff or obscure movies that won't be out in either HD format anytime soon if ever.
 
I only buy SD-DVD if the movie is in the $5 bargain bin and it doesn't have a lot of special effects. Otherwise I buy Blu Ray, although for most I will only buy BOGO or wait until I have gift cards to spend. I won't pay $30 for any new movies. I'm sure the prices will drop soon though.
 
It comes down to watching style and price for me. I watch all my DVDs on my computer while browsing the internet. It feels less 'productive' by just watching a movie a few hours straight. If I see something on TV, I can flip channels anytime and like to do so outside of commercial time; surfing takes over on the computer. I can probably do the same thing with PiP and my PS3, but that feels like too much 'work' and the resolution benefit would be wasted.

Oh and Blu-ray discs are generally $35 here while DVDs start at $25. However, most older DVDs (few months old) I can get for $15 or $10 in 2 for $## deals while the best Blu-ray deals are 2 for $50 right now, and most of that crap is old. Even the bargain bin stuff only goes for $17 (e.g. got Stargate for $6 on DVD, but it was $17 on "sale" on Blu-ray).

Maybe I'd change my perspective if I had an HDTV (tax return).
