Ok, I have the Microsoft Intellimouse Optical mouse and I've noticed that you have to have the software running in the background and in the systray for the two side buttons to work. Is this right?

only if you use win 98, they work without the software in 2k/xp. (dunno about winME, never used that...)

The buttons will work without the software, but how do you assign the buttons different functions without the software?

I have Windows 98SE, so I guess thats the problem. Its not really a problem, its just kind of annoying having to run the program in the background. As for assigning the buttons, the only way I could do it was with the software.

Why is it a problem running the program in the background? It barely takes up any resources and you can hide the icon in the system tray.

Not to mention the Version 4 of Intellipoint allows for Program specific button assignment :)
