I read if u take out all the electricity and extra weight associated with the hybrid feature, you probably would get a better MPG

is that correct?

Depends on the type of driving. Highway maybe, city maybe not.

I heard the opposite..that if you install an after market battery kit (approx. $2k) you can get up to like 80 mpg in the city because it charges better with the stop/go vs. the ongoing ride.

considering the prius electric motor is integrated into the car as a starter and alternator also, i don't see how the car would even run like that.

incidentally, i recall the prius having the same 5-60 time as 0-60. Which almost no conventional gas only car can pull off.

Indeed I do. My second actually.

Prius 2001: Great on gas, but kind of funny looking. Roomy, but irritating trunk, because the rear seats didn't fold down. Plus it was pretty low on power. Rated 0-60 mph in 12.5 seconds.

Prius 2004: Great on gas, and better looking, although I know some of you still hate the look. Even more roomy since it's a midsize now, and much, much more storage space since it's a hatchback. I fit a entire door with door frame in the car, with the trunk closed. Power is much better. 0-60 mph takes about 10 seconds I think, which ain't fast but feels good enough for me on the highway. I've driven cars that do 0-60 in less than 8 seconds but I don't make use of that extra power anyway so it's a moot point for me.

Dislikes about the Prius 2004: Rear view is a little blocked by the bar at the bottom of the windshield, where the wiper attaches. Also, the mini windshield below that bar has no wiper, so it gets mucked up quickly in rainy dirty conditions.

Also, my 2004 has no AUX input in the radio, but that's a pretty minor gripe.
