In 1980 when I was a senior in high school, this rich kid brought his computer to school for a report on technology. I think it was a Radio Shack something or other, probably a Tandy. Anyway, the storage on it was a cassette recorder! He had to push "play" to retrieve anything. I thought it was cool, but I really don't remember much else about it.

Bostonboss:

Like you, I was a fan of Zork and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and other Infocom games, back in the early '80s, when the Commodore 64 was the coolest thing in the gaming universe. Recently I learned of this site and was finally able to get back into Zork III, after having abandoned it fifteen years ago! So it's not too late to finish your Hitchhiker's Guide adventure.

Don't forget to grab your towel and your babelfish, and remember: DON'T PANIC. ;)

Russ,

You brought back one of the few pleasant memories I have in connection with my father: tinkering around with Heathkits. He would stay sober for a few hours so that his hands would be steady enough to solder. Those were happy times.

Picture a wooden paddle about 2 feet long, 8 inches wide, with air holes drilled in it. Most of my school career, mine was the favorite practice ass.

God does that bring back a memory or two.. Did the holes really make swing faster? Sure did hurt though.

My dad built a twenty five inch tv, back about 1973. I'm still amazed that he finished it, what with us kids bugging him to get it done. We only had a black and white until then, with three channels.

Hehe,

When I was a kid in Florida we had a retired Marine for a principal.
He meaded out punishment in a ship shape and orderly fashion.
The holes in the paddle weren't only for drag reduction. They also made an evil sound when the paddle was swung at just the right speed. Akin to the whine of a Stuka dive bomber.

Schwin Apple Crates, Nuff said.

The SPEED/COST of modems.

My first modem was a 300 baud which was state of the art then (83). Cost $200. I was amazed.

the last 56K modem I bought cost me $19 bucks.

My current cable modem ROCKS and breaks the 1kb barrier. I was downloading Napster tunes in less than a minute.
